Damn hate to hear that . I really wanted my new yard to look like a golf course year round

I did more research online and it says that over seeding rye on a centipede lawn is a bad idea because it doesn’t allow the lawn to dry out and causes disease

I do it every year here in Phoenix. It doesn't effect my summer Bermuda grass at all.

Scalp/de-thatch lawn
Starter fertilizer
Perennial Rye seed
Kellogg Topper seed cover
Maintain moist yard until seed is established

I've got a bare area that is pretty hard. Put some St. Aug plugs hoping they would spread but not much progress was made. Would throwing some rye down this winter help break up the soil and allow for easier spreading?
I wouldn't, the St. Aug will spread during winter, too if not brutally cold. Mine spread all year last year in NLA. It will have to spread again since chinch bugs ate most of it this summer.

Looks great for part of the winter, but it always seemed to make the normal grass worse come spring time.

This has been my observation. The yards in my neighborhood that have this done just don't look good come spring/summer.

Make sure to buy the variety for residential use, not for pasture grass for animals

Do they even sell Annual Rye in Home and Garden areas? Thought you would have to go to a feed store to buy pasture grass.

Most of the rye you get at box stores are an annual rye because it’s cheaper. Perennial rye is what you want to plant. It is usually found at landscape supply stores and is generally more expensive.

Bought some fescue seed for my backyard which is bare right now. Trying to make it through to at least next spring before I sod and do some hardscape adjustments. Just need something that doesn't look bare.

Going to till and put the seed down next week. Might try to update the board so they can laugh at my efforts over the next year.

Don’t use fescue.

Btw I seeded Tuesday. Now I’m concerned that it may come up patchy. Must have had 4 inches of rain Friday night. Hope it didn’t wash it away.

This was my winter backyard two years ago. I was cutting that SOB every 4 days! But it was beautiful!

I over seed the back yard. Go to Ewing irrigation and pick up some birdy or eagle annual rye.

Not really. I had terrible VBW issues in the backyard and nuked it with Celsius in the late summer / fall. It was so thick that I would have ended up with some major bare spots and with dogs they would be coming in muddy. So I overseeded, next summer the grass in the yard was fine everywhere. Maybe I got lucky after hearing issues that others have experience. It was a St. Aug summer grass.
