Front wooden door.
It’s in the sun all day.
Would like to stain and finish in one day.
If not, two days.
Double doors about 7.5 feet high.

Any tips on applications and product to use?

I don’t think you want to use poly in the sun. UV rays will cause it to crack and peel.

I used marine varnish on my door and 5 yrs later it looks great

I had mine faux finished and don’t regret it one bit.

I’ve tried various things and none seem to work well in the full sun.

My last house had just started to peel after 9 years with the paint.

Save yourself a lot of work, and just paint it, a solid opaque color, it will last years. Any semi-transparent stain/finish will break down form UV exposure way too fast.

This is the only answer as far as I'm concerned. Marine varnish is the shits when it comes to protecting wood exposed to the sunlight. Way better than poly for sure.

Use the Helmsman from Minwax, reapply once a year.

Pettit Flagship spar varnish. Highest UV protection know to man. I did my antique cypress door 13yrs ago. Faces the NW. And it still looks good.. i paid $120.00 a gallon but I would pay 3 times that to not have to resand and recoat every few years. Trust me on this! If you want send me your email and I will send you a picture

Whatever you decide to use, make sure that you seal the bottom cut of the door. Moisture wicks up the wood and the sun does the rest.

This

Just had mine painted after years of trying to maintain it with varnish, with it never holding up. Paint it and you’ll be good for 6-7 years. Eta possibly longer

Sikkens Cetol door and window.
Stays flexible enough to withstand the woods shrink and swell.
5 years on a direct sunlight mahogany door and I elected to apply a maintenance coat last year.
Stuff is amazing.

Use marine grade products if it’s in that much sun.

Paint that thing and be done with it.

If you are in the BR area there is a guy named Rice Sutton who can paint your door to look like it was stained. Very impressive work. Highly recommend.

Check him out

I've used Minwax Helmsman Spar varnish on sun-exposed doors and shutters and they still look great after several years. I don't think you need a boutique spar varnish, get this stuff at Lowes or HD.

I've done the same door with Helmsman twice i think, but put 4-5 coats the second time scuffing between each and made sure to seal the glass and wood due to condensation from the glass. The worst part was removing the old spar as only the bottom half of the door was in the sun. I've since moved to another house but it held up good the last few yrs before moving.
