Self exterminating

There is no downside. Order the chemicals and spray your own place. I haven't seen an insect since I've sprayed personally. Its cheaper and takes an hour every two months, inside and out.

Are you talking about Ortho Home Defense?

Just did mine today. Suspend Polyzone. Do it every 3 mos. Haven't seen a bug in years.

Can you describe what you do?

Buy concentrated product of choice, mix with water in spray pump, and spray
I've always used Cy-Kick with positive results

I do all that, too. Buy suspend and Bifen by the gallon. Where are you spraying, exactly?

Doors, entry points, windows,eaves, etc

I agree
I’ve been spraying my own house for years and never see roaches except for the dead ones

I just spray the baseboards in the house, behind the fridge, under the sinks, etc. I also spray the perimeter of the house, inside the weep holes in the brick.

When I first moved into the house I'm currently in back in 92 it had been shut down for several months while the old lady who owned it was placed in a nursing home.
Long story short, we bought the house and it needed work in several areas but the immediate attention was in pest control. There was a bunch of small "German Cockroaches" in the kitchen and bathrooms that lived in the cabinets and we saw quite a few large cockroaches too.
Off I went to Barber Laboratories and got what they recommended and that did the trick. Two applications of the spray and the squeeze bottle of Boric Acid into switch plates and little hidden areas and they were gone in no time.
To this day I may get 1 or 2 roaches in the house a year and that's it.
I do have a ground floor that half is used for a woodworking shop and the other half is for a man cave/storage area that I do spray about every other month since it is more prone to insects being on the ground floor.

I occasionally get these in 1 of my showers, no where else. I assume they come from the drain, what’d you use to kill them?

I sprayed the exterior perimeter of my house, around the vents and windows. I sprayed the baseboards, door and window openings in all rooms, and took all the stuff from underneath the sinks in the two bathrooms and kitchen and sprayed underneath. Separately, I sprayed the entire back yard as well.
Huge amount of carcasses the first couple of days, and none that I've seen since. It was my first time spraying myself so I was probably overly thorough. But I haven't seen an insect including any mosquitos since. Mosquitos have been a huge issue because a good portion of the back year is natural. I feel like an idiot that I didn't do this 20 years ago.
(edit) This is in Auburn, not Utah. In Utah ants and boxelder bugs can be an issue for some but that's about it.

I've never had an issue with roaches coming up from drains since they would likely not be able to get past the P-Trap that holds water not too far after the actual drain.
I would say your roaches in the shower are coming from another access point. Are your escutcheon plates that cover the stems of the water pipes and showerhead fixed to the wall with some type sealant. If not, maybe they are coming from the area where your shower and tub plumbing is located. You should have an access panel on the wall where your plumbing is located to access the plumbing in case anything goes wrong. If so, remove that panel and spray in that area.

So this works if you don’t have major problems, but I went with a company when I first moved in the house. We had mice in the attic and needed it continually monitored. Needed the exclusions done around the house, etc.
I’d probably spray myself after this first year is up. I also get mosquito control with it. I’ve seen no mosquitos around my place since I’ve started it. I’m not sure if you can do that yourself or not.

Has anyone had any issues with this discoloring/damaging house paint or any finishes?
I want to DIY it and I'm also mortally terrified of the r-words so I can see myself overdoing it and ruining something (i.e. doing it monthly instead of quarterly)

I haven’t. Talked with a friend that’s an exterminator and he said that it takes years of spraying to even see faint yellowing on say a white baseboards. Pending, using the correct products.
Example, Bifen XTS has a oil in it, is stronger by a tad and more concentrated. A 1/4oz per gallon. Bifen IT (cheaper) doesn’t have oil in it, plenty strong enough for quarterly sprays, 1oz per gallon. So, say you use the XTS, how long would it take to alter a color with 1/4oz per gallon mixed in your sprayer spraying quarterly? A long azz time.
