Can't decide whether to get an refrigerator or just a freezer for the garage. I hunt and fish, and also have a mini beer fridge at my bar. Help me make my decision and any suggestions on where to get a cheap one.

Stand up freezer.

Stand up fridge without a freezer.

You won't be sorry you got both.

something to consider if you get a refrigerator w/freezer...some cheaper units like mine run both the fridge and ice box at the same time. when indoors its probly not an issue. but in a garage during the winter time it wont run as much and while the fridge stays cool, the freezer starts to thaw a little.

I have both in my man cave with the exception that the fridge does have a small freezer space in the top 1/4 or so.

Keeps my bottled beer, water and stuff for set-ups cold and the upright frost free 27 cu. ft. freezer is chock full of all kinds of good things. I could live off what's in the freezer for a good 2+ months to feed the 3 of us still in the house.

If you don't want to buy new, check out Craigslist or other such places for used.

Pay whatever extra to NOT get a top loading freezer. PITA.

Both is the answer if you hunt and fish. I have the biggest stand up freezer I could find and a fridge/freezer combo and they are all full.

This. I had a chest freezer for a few years. It could hold a lot but even trying to practice good freezer management it was a pain. I kept a spreadsheet updated with everything in it. It seemed like every time I wanted to dig something out of it I'd have to dig to the bottom. Also, my wife wouldn't bother with digging anything out of it.

I bought a 21 cf upright this year and it was worth spending extra on. I shot 7 deer and a few hogs last season and they fit in it no problem.

I have a garage refrigerator with freezer on top as well. I keep bait and such in the top, beer and random crap in the bottom. I'd get rid of it if I didn't age deer quarters in it.

Only you can answer that. Is your kitchen refrigerator always stuffed?

If so get the combo for the garage. If not, get a full standing freezer.

I wish they made a standup that was mostly freezer with a little fridge space.

Get both. You won’t regret it.

I have an upright freezer, small chest freezer, and refrigerator in my garage and use all 3 of them.

I know I'm in the minority but I love my chest freezer.

Can leave the lid open for an hour and "work" out of it after butchering a deer. Very efficient electric usage. can easily stick a 5 gal bucket inside. Nothing falls off shelves and onto floor while messing around.

Key is organization. I think one mistake people make is thinking if they have the room then they need to fill it to the top. I keep mine about 1/2 to 2/3 full. Although I admit being single and the only person in the freezer probably goes a long way to keeping it organized.

If it's going in your garage, consider scratch & dent places. I just got a 21cf upright freezer from a place in Port Allen for $475 cash. Still had all of the tags and stuff inside. It would have been over $950 from Lowes. They told me they have a contract with Lowes to take their damaged appliances.

My old one was smaller and cools great, but the defrost wasn't working properly. If anyone is interested in it, let me know. Would probably make a great kegorator.

We got a fridge/freezer for the garage, and quickly realized we needed a lot more freezer space than fridge space, so we got a chest freezer 3 months later. If I had to choose one, I’d definitely go with a freezer.

Another strong vote for stand up freezer.

We had a chest freezer for years that stayed full and was therefore difficult to dig through and remember what was hidden on the bottom.

We got rid of it and bought a stand up freezer couple years back and it’s much better for us and the kids. It stays full too, but everything is very organized on the shelves now and all in view.

This. It was an absolute game changer for grocery cost.

We hammer the sales at sams/costco/heb.

It cut our grocery bill by 25%. We also cook meals in double batches now. Eat one, freeze the other. We could probably go 6 weeks without cooking right now just eating frozen homemade meals.
