Title says it all. I would prefer top loader with agitator versus a front loader, but not ruling out anything.

I have researched this site and the consensus was Speed Queen or Maytag.

Also have done a ton of research from online reviews, and the consensus appears to be GE and LG as the top.

Spoke to someone who recently bought the middle of the pack speed queen and they mentioned their clothes don't get clean. I'm currently using an LG WM4200HBA, and while the washer seems fine the Dryer sucks. It's sensing the clothes are dry and stops the cycle with wet clothes in the middle. I put it on timed dry and it does about 45 minutes on high heat and then does last 15 as a cool down and the clothes still aren't dry.

Formerly had Hot Point based on Napoleons recommendation and while it didn't have a problem in the 6 years I owned it, it was tough on the clothes and caused some loss of elasticity in boxers/swim trunks.

I'm considering going to Stanton's and just finding the best thing I can in the Dinged and Dented section, but also wanted to get some more personal pros/cons.

I replaced a 10 year Whirlpool Cabrio with a Speed Queen TR5 in March, based on recommendations of many on this board and my own homework. I also considered the Maytag Commercial based on the recommendations of others on this board, and my homework - i liked everything I read about it and it was a flip of the coin between the 2, similar price point with both.

I’m very happy with the SQ - cleans clothes very well that I can see and very quiet. No regrets what so ever and I’ll replace my Whirlpool Cabrio dryer when it dies with a SQ.

I’m always puzzled to some degree with the “not getting clothes clean” statement frequently mentioned - I wonder what the standards people use for what they expect. Though I don't work in a machine shop or another extremely dirty/greasy venue, I do a lot of yard work and can get clothes pretty grungy with heavy dirt and grime on a regular basis and they get cleaned very well to my satisfaction with the SQ, as well they did with the Whirlpool.

Maytag Commercial

I have a Maytag Commercial Washer and it seems to clean fine with no agitator but it is a top load. Very large drum.

Have an older whirlpool generic with knobs that click dryer and it gets hot as hell for however long needed. I keep it on the medium setting and the clothes come out hot to the touch.

I have the Maytag commercial washer. Very happy with it. I think the agitator in the Maytag is better than the SQ. The SQ has a beefier motor. A lot of the other stuff seems pretty comparable. The cycle settings are more of a personal preference thing.

Can’t help you with a dryer recommendation. I have a 20+ year old whirlpool that I’ve been able to keep running because they are stupid easy to work on.

So I found this link in a thread from here and it seems like the Maytag agitates better, but its obviously a Maytag biased video so I wonder how much I can believe it.

Maytag Commercial vs SQ

Verbatim from a SQ owner: "It doesn't get our clothes clean. I hate it. Any food stains you have will have to be treated beforehand and soaked."

They have a toddler so I assume they have lots of food on the clothes.

ETA: found a SQ sponsored video, and I'm right back at square 1.

i personally find front loaders with steam function clean much better than old fashioned top loaders like SQ and maytag.

i had LG direct drive front loaders for 10+ years before giving them to a friend as we were moving. Still going strong for him.

Personally I just bought the samsung 2 and 1 washer and dryer, 2021 model. We shall see.

If it was my choice only I would have went LG or GE. GE has fixed the front load smell and mold issue.

everyone here is going to say SQ as they hate all the buttons etc. I never have any problems with electronics and honestlty one thing I remember from being a kid is getting yelled at for not holding the flashlight correctly while helping my dad change the belts on washers and dryers. They were Maytag. Had to do it more than once.

honestly too, washers and dryers are like 500-700 now, if they last 5-8 years...cool, just go get new ones after that.

but im sure im in the minority and will get downvoted like all hell with the speed queen guys.

Don't get an LG or Samsung. They suck. We've had our LG for 2 years . Thank god the wife(no pics) bought the extended warranty. We've had the control panel go out twice. Stay with SQ or Maytag.

Honestly maybe I’m speaking out of ignorance or missing something, but my mother from childhood and wife from adulthood alway pre-treat stains from food, ink pens in pockets, blood, etc with appropriate stain removers prior to washing. Our laundry room is filled with a multitude of stain removers “Shout”, “OxyClean”…. and seems to me stain removal would be more of a function of the detergent being used in the washer and not the mechanical action of the washer per se (well maybe both). Look, even SQ on their website discusses pre-treating stains prior to washing LINK. Washers and detergents can only do so much - do people really expect washers to remove “staining products” without pre-treatment with an appropriate stain remover?

Now SQ did make a model change in 2018 that seemed to be a colossal failure with reports of “poor” cleaning with bad reviews LINK and SQ changed it back to the old style the following year - wonder if your friend has that year model?

I watched many of the same videos as you. Actually when I went to buy the washer I was prepared to buy either the SQ or Maytag Commercial, the SQ was in stock, the Maytag had to be ordered and I was in need of the washer ASAP so SQ it was. My sister told me my niece went to buy a SQ a couple weeks ago (Houston) back ordered until October. Availability may be your biggest issue for whatever you choose, depending on how quickly you need it. Went to buy a KitchenAid Refrigerator in early July - won’t be available until September - fortunately I’m not in a rush on this as my current frig works fine.

We have sq. The mid level of each the washer and gas dryer. We have three sons under 10. These units do not disappoint.

My sister and mother in law have the fancy front load or no agitator ones. They hate them.

LG sucks. Don’t do it. Bite the bullet and get a speed queen. It is worth it in the long run.

I have a mid level LG front loader and it's fine so far. Been about a year and a half. I'd say wife averages 2-3 loads per day with no issues. I was concerned with wear and tear on my dress shirts for work from agitator washer, so I actually wanted the front loader. We tried a HE top loader by GE a few years ago and it broke just out of warranty. Repair cost would have exceeded cost of new washer. It lasted like 2 years. Will not buy another top load HE. The design is stupid anyway.

Had to wait almost 3 months for our SQ at Stantons but it’s completely worth it. Clothes are demonstrably cleaner than our last set. Cleans fast and quiet and holds a ton.

Looked at Maytag Commercial and would have gone with that set if not for multiple personal recs.

If you go to Stanton’s, see Laura Boudreaux. She will steer you in the right direction. I went there thinking I was going to buy a Whirlpool and walked out with Speed Queen. Glad I did. She’s very knowledgeable

I can't even begin. For anyone who is thinking of LG and the prospect of having to use their customer service, I'll try to sum it up.

I bought a topish of the line LG washer and dryer, front loads, very highly reviewed, etc in Sept 2020. March 2021 the dryer stops drying out the blue. I call LG, they send a repair person out, changes some stuff. Doesn't work. He orders some more stuff, comes out, doesn't work. After no-showing on appt. 3, he shows up for the next one and still can't fix.

I call LG after hearing nothing for 10 days, and they say they haven't gotten what they need from the local repair guy. 10 days later they do, and they need to send a different company "just to confirm." He shows up, and I tell him the history and he just shrugs. He has no idea he's supposed to "confirm" anything. He is starting from scratch, and begins ordering the same parts which were already replaced. He tells me his plan is to order the parts, come back, then lie to them and say he replaced them but they still didn't work. This would take 3 more weeks because the parts have to come from LG.

I made 27 calls in the 98 days it took to finally get them to agree to a replacement. As you can imagine, each call is 30+ mins of hold music. The final straw 20 days after I was told a replacement was approved, and BestBuy would be contacting me to arrange delivery within 3 days (BB said they had nothing), was an agent telling me that had been canceled because I didn't let guy #2 finish the repair attempt.

I emailed the President's office with a random email I got online. The next day his assistant called, I explained. BestBuy called me 8 hours later and arranged delivery.

I've never experienced customer service like this, ever. I've left out countless "let me transfer you to X department" (always different) with a 40m hold and hangup. It is truly awful.

Stay away from the top load LG. Just replaced the washer which granted did give me 9 years of service but that was with me changing the tub shocks out annually to keep the washer from getting unbalanced. I replaced it with a whirlpool top loader with an agitator and our clothes seems to be cleaner better and the towels don’t have the musty smell after one or two uses. I still have the dryer and it is working but the bearing on the drum are starting to squeal a bit so won’t be long until it is replaced. I wanted a speed queen but had nowhere to get them in a reasonable time which is why I went with the whirlpool I could get the same day from Lowe’s.
