Quickest way to get grass to grow on clay

I had a shop built and had to have a good bit of dirt work done around the building. I have a roughly 100' x 20' section of compacted clay that wraps around a couple sides of the building that I need to get grass to grow on as quickly as possible, more so my dogs stop tracking that tacky shite in the house than for anything else . Sod seems expensive and I'm pretty sure the dogs would tear that up, will grass seed work well in compacted clay? Seems like they'd wash away before taking hold. Anyone try those roll out mats with fertilizer and stuff built in?

Centipede for around $100 a palletx5 = $500. Get you a case of beer and get out there and get it done.

Top dress it with top soil and get 4 pallets of sod.

If you have dogs I would strongly advise against centipede.
If you have full sun sod with Bermuda or st augustine would be better than centipede.

You are not going to get a pallet of any sod for $100

Is the top soil necessary? The sod won't take to the clay?

Why? I really don't know my grasses at all. I have 4 acres and don't a damn about how it looks, just want coverage.

It's not the looks. Centipede supposedly doesn't hold up to foot traffic.

Throw out some rye grass it'll take until you get sod.

I think centipede runs closer to $200/pallet. But I agree with the sentiment.

Centipede does not tolerate much traffic at all. It also is really sensitive to salts and if you have dogs pissing in it daily it will not last long. It will develop thatch and then be more susceptible to fungus.
Other grasses like Bermuda will also be damaged by dog urine and traffic. However they can repair at a much faster rate.

Appreciate the advice everyone!

Clay gets such a bad rep, but you can certainly grow grass in it. Managing compaction takes time and it’s not nearly as good as top soil for growth.
But you can seed it. Just need to till/rake/break the top few inches, lay down some fertilizer and seeds, then water. It’ll grow.

Did this in the space between my house and fence on one side. Took a little longer than advertised. Have more weeds in the area than I did before putting it down. Don't know if it's from the mat, or because I found out after the fact the crew that filed my backyard used the cheap river sand.
It gives it a good look from a distance, but when you walk up to it, it looks really thin and like shite. But gave me the cheap ground coverage I needed (no dogs) because I didn't want to put too much work on that side since I will have more contractors in my backyard and that's the biggest gate.

I don't know a ton, but with St. Aug, the sod in my yard took waaaaaay better in places where I put down top-soil/compost. Also rented a tiller to tear up the old mixed grass I killed off. This broke up the surface dirt and mixed in the top-soil/compost.
Had a few spots where I just stuck the extra sod pieces and didn't surface prep the same and pretty much all those didn't take. The $40 rental of the tiller was worth it and I had the compost mixture already.

Where can I get centipede for this price???

I laid 5 pallets of centipede sod directly on clay dirt and it took fine. The sod comes with a thin layer of top soil

Nope…I’ve got centipede, and it grows too slowly for clay. I would opt for st Augustine.
