Porch Ceiling Replacement

The front and back porch ceilings are hideous, as they are 4x8 hardy(?). Was thinking about replacing and adding some better lighting while doing so. Like the tongue and groove look. What wood type should I be considering? Obviously, this will not be cheap, so I want to make sure I pick a product that will last. Probably go with a light stain.
Probably do the front porch first. It is roughly 6'x 20'.
Your thoughts and recommendations? Any advice or other things I should consider?

5/4 T&G - wouldn’t stain paint it a powder blue - it keeps wasp nests and spider webs to a minimum.

They make the vinyl "wainscot" for outdoor ceilings. Looks fantastic and upkeep is a breeze. You never have to paint again.

There's someone on here who used fence boards and it looks amazing.

One of my neighbors used trusscore over their plywood ceilings in their carport and garage and it actually looked OK. It is a PVC panel.

5/4?! Jesus Christ!
Everybody does pine t&g but it always comes out with an orange when stained.
Also, I “stained” mine powder blue and didn’t have issues with wasps but they look dirty and for some reasons a few boards are showing what looks like mold. Spring project is a good pressure washing
and quality paint job. Will be going back with powder blue.

I used 3/4” appearance-grade treated boards. Used table saw to put 1/4” bevel on each bottom side of board to get shadow-line effect of T&G (without cutting T&G). Picked straight boards, pushed them as close as possible. Stained with light green (BM Arborcoat). Topped with ply and standing seam roof panels

Old wives tale. It is a result of years ago the blue paint they used contained lye. It is pleasing as a porch ceiling color though.

This has been debunked many times. Blue ceilings started on antebellum homes due to something about protection from ghosts and spirits.

Hence the name - Haint Blue.

We used cyprus tongue and groove boards on the rear porch. It's a nice look.

Cedar fence boards, planed on one side for smoothness. Cheap and easy, just like your mom...

Looks great. What stain did you use? And did you just leave the edges as the were from the store/yard?

I left the edges with the factory finish, rough I guess you could say. They were pretty uniform so there aren't many gaps, if any at all. Note, these were some quality fence boards prior to the pandemic from a lumber yard, i haven't seen anything as good at lowes or home depot.
I used something called arborcoat from benjamin moore in Walnut Brown 1/4 formula (full was too dark). It's a stain and sealer.

I was guessing a walnut shade. Well done!
