Pros and cons of both?

Attached has the same bells and whistles as an unattached hot tub?

Attached. Then you have a pool heater (GAS) to extend the swimming season in each direction if you’re so inclined. Also provides a level of protection in the case of hard freezes as it will kick on when the temp hits ~35F to prevent freeze damage to the pipes (so long as there’s power).
I had a pool in another house with no hot tub or heater and used it from May to early October. Now I use my pool from March into November and the hot tub year round.

Attached.
Your maintaining 2 pools otherwise. One is very tiny, but tiny pools swing wildly.
2 separate pumps and filters to maintain.

Unless you’re a Swinger, hot tubs are a waste of money. Ask any realtor.

Attached.
And don’t listen to people who don’t have hot tubs try and tell you they’re a bad idea.
My wife and I use ours year round prob twice a week. Heat that bad boy up get in have some drinks watch a show or whatever, you might have a brain problem if you think that isn’t great.

Mine is separate but only 10 ft away.

This may literally be the dumbest comment ever made on TD.

Attached is better aesthetically and you are only treating and maintaining one water system.
Non attached will probably be more comfortable to sit in with more jets, bubbles and reclining seats etc. most attached you are sitting on a hard bench.

Pools in general are a waste of money, but the heart wants what the heart wants...

Realtor, landscape architecture degree here.
Get the 'spa' with the waterfall (overflow) into the pool.
Get it zoned to be able to heat the spa separately from the pool. Get the whirlpools & lights too.
A soak in spa between October and March is nice.
Gas powered unless you have a generator connected to it too.

What are this boards thoughts on the heated pool addition as well?

It depends on what you want from it. An inground attached hot tub is typically a bench with very basic jets behind your back. You're sitting in a small hot pool without much of anything else.
A standalone hot tub will have true jets and 10x the power.

Exactly what we have. We don't use the spa a ton, but it is nice to go out there in the Winter and we can have it hot in about 10 mins. The waterfall feature is nice, we like to have weekend breakfast on the back porch and it is very peaceful to hear the running water. Also, when we have pool parties the kids use the hot tub as a "kiddie pool."

Ours is about 15 feet from the pool. Overflow pipe between both as well as pool/spa jets and pump. If they have an overflow pipe, be sure to use a 4" pipe, my 2" pipe clogs often with leaves.
Enjoy! We enjoy ours a few times a week.

Seems like you get way more bells and whistles with an unattached hot tub though...
