I’m not sure there is a reason to by any chemicals at the pool store unless you value convenience or reach a necessity.

Yeah, my first experience was that Wal Mart is more than 50% cheaper than our pool store

I have the Water Guru. It's nice. Probably a waste of money. It did help me figure out a few things with my pool. It only reads the PH and the Free Chlorine and pool skimmer flow. It uses cartridges that have to be replaced every 30 days or so and sits in the skimmer. I get a reading every morning about 8:15 and that's it unless I tell it to take a reading.

My pool guy recommended Sutro and said that the people who have it like it. But, it's $500 and you have to pay a monthly fee to get the stuff to take the readings. Now, it gives you more readings, but $30/month for the stuff to get the readings. They do let you pause the monthly payment for when you're not using the pool like in the winter.

I have these and like them, but I have at least one spider on the top of the handle (right where you grab it) just about every time I check them. The spiders get on there to keep from drowning in the skimmer. If you just kind of quickly flick the handle it's pretty easy to knock them off so you can grab the handle, but just something to be aware of.

For folks with the Dolphin robotic cleaner, have you changed your filters in the baskets? Was thinking of changing mine and wondered if it made any difference to water quality or it’s ability to get smaller algae dust debris.

Yes. I’ve found it makes a big difference in the ability to get smaller particles. I’m still finishing up landscaping/dirt work around the pool, so it tends to get some fine dirt on the bottom.

Only issue is the filters clog up pretty quickly. Have to clean them pretty often.

Anybody else struggling to find Muriatic Acid? Seems it’s sold out everywhere and I was stupid and didn’t buy it from HD because they had 2 Gal boxes when I just needed 1 Gal.

Haven't noticed a shortage, but I buy it by the case and don't use a ton. I'd call around to the pool stores.

Thanks. I’m having problems with silt / algae dust being blown back into pool from relief valve. Going to try to replace the micron filters and see if that makes a difference.

Did you look in the paint section? I usually pick up the muriatic acid used to etch and clean concrete.

Could you explain a little more? I have silt showing up constantly. What is the relief valve and why would it cause this problem?

We have a gunite pool with quartzite and do our own maintenance due to service availability where we live. It has been far easier than we thought. Our pool has an automatic chlorine dispenser at the pump that we put 3” tablets in and we can manually adjust how much chlorine is dispersed to the pool. Other than that the only thing we do is carry a water sample weekly to have it tested and they give us a printout of what we need to treat with as well as quantities. Our vacuum is set on a timer and runs for three hours daily so other than the occasional chemicals all we have to do is clean the vacuum bag weekly and strainer basket daily.

We use surgical hair nets in our skimmer baskets. The skimmer 'socks' disintigrated in no time. With the hair nets, we just pull them out of the skimmer baskets and throw away daily.

I just bought a house with a pool. How long do you normally run the pump? Mine is on 24/7.

I've got mine set to kick on at 8am (about when the sun is getting to it) until 9pm.

So far so good this season, but I may bump up the time when the water gets warmer.
