What are y’all’s thoughts on the depth of a pool. One pool company suggested 3.5 on the left and right and 5.5 in the middle.

Pool will be 16x32 rectangular with a 14x7 sun deck and a hot tub. Plan on having the hot tub about 6 to 8 feet from my outdoor kitchen area with the pool running the length of my back porch which is 35 foot.

I’m wondering if I should go 3.5 on the left and right with the deep part in the middle or just have a deep end and shallow end. Another option is should I go deeper than the 5.5 foot?

If you have kids who like to dive, get a deep pool.

Else, keep it shallow.

Go with 4' at the shallow end, unless you have little kids. 4' is much better for an adult/teen shallow end.

I recently put in a pool and went with 3' to 5'6. I have young kids, otherwise I would gone deeper by 6" on the whole pool. I like the deep end. The layout you are talking about is nice for sports pools but will suck if you have kids jumping in.

Make sure you have an armrest in the hot tub so your back isn't hitting the coping. Also, if the hot tub is flush, put a step. It's typically 21" or so inches from your deck to the hot tub seat. That's not easy to manage when drinking.

Is there a reason it needs to be sloped? Every builder suggests it, but wasn’t sure why it couldn’t be a flat bottom?

I never really understood the deep part in the middle. I’d keep it traditional with a shallow side to a deeper side.

I’m a short guy, so I was planning to go 3’ to 5’. But was also planning to have a 18” “splash area” by the hot tub, with a tanning ledge on the opposite end of pool.

One thing people don’t think about regarding depth is water temp. The deeper your pool the cooler it will stay. This is a must if you have a house that gets full sun. Believe me I learned the hard way and have a pool too shallow and it heats up to the low 90’s in the peak of summer to the point where I am looking at chillers.

FYI my pool is designed almost identical to your design. 4 feet at the ends sloping to about 5 in the middle. Tanning shelf along the back and a spa.

Contemplated same thing. “Play pool” Had company come out and lay out shallow, deep, shallow area in yard and the entire shallow end is sloping to make quick transition to deep part. In my opinion you would need 40’ to make it work like I envisioned. The sun deck along with hot tub will take up a good bit of one end of your 3.5 section. You will not have very much pool length from hot tub Edge to 5.5 depth and need to drop 2k’ pretty quick. Would be a wasted end of the pool in my opinion.
Ended up with 38’ 3.5 shallow, 8.5 deep with swim up ledge in deep end. Very happy with decision.
Advice on sundeck. Have A “fan” return jet to help move water on deck, gets hot on summer days. Also the one thing I regret is not
Having a light installed on sun deck. Darkest place in my pool.

I forgot to mention the hot tub and sun deck will not be part of the 16x32 area.

The 32 foot will be all pool with sport steps in the corner and maybe a bench on the back of the hot tub.

When I built mine (20 years ago), the guy said if you are not putting in a diving board (which I chose not to) then go 5.5 max. He said that 80% of the time, people stay in the shallow end and he was right. I had 3 kids and they and their friends mostly stayed in the shallow end. All the adults always stayed in the shallow end. If I were to do it again, I would have the deep part in the middle (water volleyball for kids).

We have some water problems going that deep, but are going tanning ledge. to like 3 foot 10 inch with the deep end at 7, two swim up benches in each corner.

Nice! I’m pretty close to miss river
And had issues too. Dig in June and water
Table still pretty wet in my area. Had to have gunite company come out and put skim coat of gunite to prevent cave ins.

My advice to you is build what you want, and research any “suggestions” pool companies say. Based off My experience Your pool company not Willing to pay expense of extra gunite truck trip, and labor to have someone dig out a cave in with rebar set.

Like I said we are happy with design other than light on sun deck. Adults will swim out and make way to seating area in deep and kids enjoy diving and trying to knock all the water out with cannon balls.

Yeah, 4 is almost perfect. Most kids older than 7/8 can get around in it just fine, and it isn't so shallow like a 3 foot where adults have to crouch down to get in. The condos we stayed in last summer had 3 different pools. One was a smaller T-shaped pool, and was 3 feet in the two side sections, and got to 4 feet out in the middle. The other was a much larger rectangular pool, and it was 3.5 on the ends and got to 5 in the middle. Pretty common for your normal rectangular shaped pools. The wife had a pool growing up and it went from 3 on the shallow end to 7 or 8 on the deep end, but they had a diving board. I've seen some go as deep as 10, but they were larger pools at country clubs or resorts and had several diving boards.

5.5 ft deep end. It makes the whole pool usable.

Ive got a pool with similar dimensions, 3.5' shallow and 6' deep. Looking back I would have gone 4'-6'. With the tanning ledge, the smaller kids hang around there, and adults tend to go for around 4' of water when we hang out. Also, if you jump in in 3.5' of water, you hit the bottom fast. Ask me how I know.

My parents had the sports pool and when I was in HS and college we wore that thing out with pool Vball and what not in the summer. Parties all the time. Always forgot to check the hot tub for bottle caps.

Honestly, a gentle sloping pool from 3.5 ft to 5ft would be pretty sweet too.

I don't see the appeal of going over 5ft unless you are going deep and I'm about 6 ft tall as you can't really do much when its that deep. I don't think insurance really covers diving boards anymore? Deep pools are great for like 15 minutes for kids but in the long run are not used.

The one knock on my parents sport pool was that the two slopes were sharp.

The deeper you go, as mentioned, the longer to heat and cool down. Also, mine was built in the 80's when blue slides and crappy diving boards were abundant. My pool is 9 damned feet. The deeper you go the longer you clean and vacuum. My neighbor could brush and vacuum his an about 40 minutes. Mine is 2 hours.

Also my pool is about 30K gallons. Take whatever you chemical you will put in the pool you describe and double it.

I know shallow pools are the fashion now. They're cheaper to dig, cheaper to plaster, and easier to clean. They warm up faster in the spring.

But there is really something to be said for grabbing a closed beer from the outdoor fridge and jumping straight into the 10ft deep end after mowing the yard in July.

Most of them just make it as deep as it grades down from the length.

Mine is a little over 6 feet at the deepest
