I have a friend who is complaining about the $150/hr rate the plumber is charging.

He said he doesn't mind the charge for difficult tasks, but doesn't like paying that for simply things.....

What is the going rate per hour?

Your friend sounds like a complete tool.

If he doesn't want to pay for "simply" things, he can do them himself or shop for a cheaper plumber.

Looks like it is

Tell your friend to call around to a few plumbers and get some prices.

YouTube is a valuable tool. As long as it's not in a wall/attic, and he is at least somewhat competent with working with his hands, try it himself.

In this day an time, you better have a good plumber, A/C Guy, Electrician, mechanic, CPA, Attorney, Dr, etc.
I’ve been lucky, over the years I have a number of these guys. Most are my good friends.

I had a recent plumbing repair on a rental in Gulf Shores. Pex fitting in attic was leaking

Plumbing labor 1.5 hours $202.43
Shop Supplies $6.75
3/4" 90 degree elbows(4) $13.28
Pex pipe .75 x 1 feet $3.38
3/4" pex crimp rings (8) $7.92
Total $233.76
Tax $3.13
Total $236.89

Most of the 1.5 hours of labor was drive time

There are two types on cheap people. First is the person who doesn't want to spend money so they live with what they have. The other is the person that wants something or a service but doesn't want to actually pay for it.

The latter really annoys me. The former is me.

If he doesn't want to pay for the "simple" tasks then don't hire the plumber to do them. With youtube, anyone who says they can't do something, just doesn't want to be bothered to learn something new.

I’m an apprentice plumber myself and have seen some huge bills. Until society pushes for kids to go into trades instead of college, prices will only go up. There’s a lot of old guys in our company that will soon retire.
As far as the job, I’d have done it for you much cheaper, but I hate charging people a lot when I do side jobs.

My BIL who is a master plumber, recently retired, worked on his own with a helper if needed, 1 truck, home office, so low overhead, he charged $100/hour, 2 years ago - you know it would be more today.

His brother, also a master plumber, with multiple employees and several trucks, plumbing business office, a secretary, … charges $150/hour - that was a year ago. New Orleans.

I’m not sure I’d want to hire any skilled licensed tradesman charging less than $100 per hour - I’d be questioning their skill set if they charged much less b/c the good ones can easily command that price, and don’t lack for work/jobs.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a
lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

- John Ruskin

This is good - reminds of what my auto service shop owner says - you may, or may not get what you pay for, but one thing is certain, you’ll never more than you pay for.

I use the same plumber as my friend does. He's worked on my projects for over 20 years and is indeed a "master plumber."

I think he was charging $85/hr back in the day, and I figure his prices have gone up like everything else.

I gladly pay what he charges for professional work and no headaches.

Your friend doesn’t understand businesses, then. You have the drive, the cost of the material, the helper’s wage, insurance, etc. The time spent on his job is time away from somewhere else with the opportunity to make more money. He complains about $150/hour….call a handyman. And when the handyman’s repair fails-call a licensed, insured professional to fix it.

Not saying there aren't some silly high bills for people who just don't know or feel like getting multiple quotes, but the trades are chock full of employees who think they could charge so much less and still make better money if they went into business for themselves. The smarter ones will realize after about 18mo that overhead is a bitch and either up their prices or close shop. The unfortunate ones will take 5+ years of mucking through thinking next year is finally going to the one where it all comes together. Of course there are the ones who realize the extreme importance of the business side and do make it. But for the 1 that is successful there are 9 that are spending the next 5 miserable years going out of business.

Try finding a handyman for the simple things usually ~$50/hr
150 for a master plumber is about right, they will not discount “easy” jobs

I had a plumbing job done at my house about 4 months ago that involved replacing a 4 inch sewer drain line from my 2nd floor bathroom to the slab on the first floor and picked up my bathroom sink and washing machine drain in the same line.

Master plumber, 2 helpers, 4 hours time and materials came to an even $1000 out the door.

I had pulled the toilet and opened a wall prior to them showing up to make access easy for them and they set the toilet when the new flange and sewer line were completed.

150/hr sounds about right for a one off job/fix.

Sounds like your friend needs to either fix it himself or shut up. He should be thrilled the guy didn't charge him drive time.

Thats honorable of you, but unless it’s a family/friend then you have to get your worth man. Nobody else in this world is giving you a break.

Well, the reason he figures he can charge less is he's an apprentice who doesn't own a business with all the expenses of running a business like buying all the supplies, tools, salaries and overhead costs like having a shop, liability insurance, workman's comp insurance, vehicle overhead and insurance----insurance insurance----see the common thread here that makes business owners have to charge so much????
