Plumber didn’t fully clear clogged drain - they still want full rate and fees to try again

Had a plumber snake a drain yesterday and it seemed to be clear before he left. I mentioned to him that it sounded like it was still backing up some but with each try, it sounded better. He said it was fine. I paid the flat $250 price for 20 minutes of work, and he left.

Drain backed up again. I called and mentioned that it was backing up again and that I wanted them to come back to clear without extra charge, and they said no. That it was clear yesterday so to clear a “new clog” would require the flat $250 fee and diagnosing/working on something more than a clog would require their hourly fee.

I said I was going with a different company, and he said that would be policy at any plumbing company in town.

That sound right to you? Seems like bullshite to me.

Well yes and no. He's claiming it's a "new" clog, so of course every plumbing company in town would have a policy that you pay to clear new clogs.

But I seriously doubt all plumbing companies would say it was a new clog, and realize they didn't finish the job right the first time.

It's crazy to me that small businesses do stuff like that to ensure they lose a customer for life.

Do you have the actual plumbers number that came over? The main office likely will always tell you that, but if you talk to the actual plumber they may be more reasonable.

If it’s truly the same issue and just didn’t clear, then yes they didn’t do their job and should return. But you definitely shouldn’t let them leave until you are satisfied.

Had a plumber last year for slow tub drain. They had to come out 3 times because it kept happening again after 1 day. All covered under the original $180. Earls plumbing in Metairie.

Exact thing happened to me. Had a clog and they came out and cleared it. Literally two days later it was still backing up. I called and they said the same thing yours did. Told me it would be another full price charge to clear it. After talking to the owner. He then told me I had a sag in the line and it would need to be tunneled to fix. That's why it keeps clogging.

So after a long argument I made a deal with him to bring a camera and show me this sag in my line. If there was a sag I would pay for his camera and another full price to clear the line. If it was just a clog that was pushed down the line and not cleared I wouldn't pay a thing. I didn't pay a thing.

Plumbers can be the worst sometimes. I can imagine how they get over on a lot of people.

I've used the same plumber for 25 years. That would never happen.

Edit: Meaning he would not charge for a call back.

Fwiw, the plumber should have never left with it ‘sounding better with each use’. Drains are almost always either clear or not, I’m not a plumber but I deal with my rental properties with this often. Usually once it is clear, it’s working properly. Now, you may need to potentially ‘flush’ the clog out but the plumber should have never left and considered complete until this happened.

Septic or gravity distribution? Often times backups cause clogs. Just making sure it isn’t a bigger issue causing the backup like failed drain field or septic that needs to be pumped.

If this is not a septic system or something in the line between the house and the main sewer, its sounds like the plumber just pushed a clog farther down the line. If the problem is beyond the house, the snaking may have just knocked gunk off the sides of the pipe.

You may have to have a camera run.

I have a problematic spot in my line. Clogs several times a year. I can unclog it with a bladder attached to a hose that puts water line pressure on the sewer line. Have you tried that? Cheaper than a plumber.

If it is roots, then it won’t clear that probably.

Do us all a favor and be a "Karen" and name the company so we know not to call them. This is 100% bullshite and I would stop the original payment for failure to do what they were paid for.

I had this done for about $125 5 months ago and it clogged again in less than 30 days so they came back and did it at no charge. 30 day guarantee. Ask up front about that.

Go with a different plumber. This guy is a shitty plumber AND a shitty businessman.
Make sure to warn friends and family against using him

ETA: He's also ripping you off with that price. My plumber charges $115 to show up. Hourly rate after that is $80 I think (plus cost of any parts he has to purchase).

I’d tell him 2 things…your next phone call is to the Better Business Bureau. The one after that will be to an attorney. Then you’ll find every possible rating service online to down his services. He’s got 2 hours and your not giving him more than the shite in the pipe. Most plumbers are either new construction plumbers which are the good ones or they’re the service call type. The service call type rely on reputation and internet reviews. Hit him where it hurts if that’s the case.

Useless. $ buys BB ratings and they have no teeth.

For a couple hundred bucks? No attorney is going to take that and I'm sure the plumber isn't worried about the possibility of refunding such a small amount.

Even the online reviews are a long shot. I'm sure he can get 10 people to offset one negative reviews.

The only viable options are to file a complaint with the licensing board.
Submit Complaint Here

File a small claims lawsuit.

Or disputing the charge with the bank if it wasn't paid cash.

That guy would never step foot on my property again, and I would trumpet his business practices from the mountain tops.

Is this a local, independent guy or a national chain?
