Can be tough to grow in south Louisiana. Definitely have to keep them out of afternoon sun. Check out the LSU Ag link below.

I believe there is a poster here who grows them as a hobby. Do a search it is a long and very detailed thread he did on it

Keep them on the north side of the house and they’ll be fine. Have 2 of them at my house and they look nice.

I have one on the east side of my house and it gets crispy by the end of summer. Does well though

There is a new cultivar called Acer Palmatum Baton Rouge, supposed to be very heat tolerant

Additionally, deep-fried maple leaves are a delicacy in Japanese cuisine.

I have one. Full sun and growing nicely. Beautiful tree. I’d snap a pic but may be too dark this evening
The Baton Rouge is on the right

I am not familiar with the baton rouge variety but sounds like a good option. Other than that one, the Bloodgood variety is the most heat and sun tolerant I have found. Either one needs to have moist soil. I've been using Forest Pansy Red Bud when I want a tree with maroon color and is a lot tougher than a JM.

The Baton Rouge was a sport found on a coral bark growing in the Houston area. It’s been propagated and proven to perform exceptionally well in the heat. Coral bark, green leaves
