A pool is a huge moneypit, but worth all the money spending time outdoors with the family.

I could not imagine my life down here without our pool. I know we are fairly new to having one, about 4 years, I just can not imagine not having it.

Put my pool in during the summer of 2019 before the costs skyrocketed. I cannot imagine not having it now, and my only regret is not having done it sooner.

Maintenance is a breeze. Water has been crystal clear for the 5 years I've owned it.

We did all the landscaping ourselves over the years and now the backyard is a paradise. I'll use the pool for roughly 7 months out of the year, and even when the water is too cold, the water features are peaceful and I enjoy that during the winter months.

We have a neighborhood pool just down the street, and it is worth every penny to walk out my back door and get in my own pool without having to deal with other people.

I can't imagine not owning a pool now. It's worth every penny to me.

That's really my experience with it. It's totally a unique value proposition for every family. I make no sweeping proclamations... to each his own.

If you plan on spending 2-3 full days of hanging out in the pool as your enjoyment. Get some sort of a club membership and go a few times a year to enjoy all day. But I'd equate that to the difference between owning your own vehicle, or having to hail a Uber for every trip to the store. Just not the same experience. Especially with how I "enjoy" the pool personally.

I was thinking about this thread Saturday.

- Sweating my arse off doing an outside woodworking project for 4 hours
- 45 minute swim
- 1 hour cutting grass while still in my swim trunks
- 45 minute swim with one of my sons who was bored
- back to Lowes for more wood... 90 minutes more woodworking
- 45 minute swim with both of my boys
- Dinner
- Wife goes for a swim, I join her after doing the dishes

Before the pool, my day would look very similar but I'd have been miserable hot all day. And probably still radiating heat after a cold shower before bed. We have a blast in it, but the pool isn't a party hub for my day-to-day. It allows me to live my life, how I want, even in our summers.

Unfortunately, I have the pool fever. Three kids in daycare makes that financially impossible at the moment, but once everyone is in grade school we will probably bite the bullet and get one.

Probably a better use of money than a new lake boat

That's a choice. In-state schools plus scholarships does not equate to six figures.

Same boat. She ended up buying a pool off amazon. Cheap above ground pool, with the pump and all that jazz. I said you keep this up, then we can talk. Well, it's turned green twice, and continually gets cloudy. Even my 5 year old tells her "Daddy is never getting us a pool".

We inched up the size of disposable pool as the kids got older. Eventually I had one that was soft sided but had a pump and filter. That thing was impossible to keep clean. It's not a fair comparison to a real pool. I'm 3 years in with minimal effort and I can see a stray dog hair underwater across the length of the pool.

We put one in 4years ago, right as Covid was kicking off.

32x16, sitting ledge, 2 water features, finite, deck, etc.

$32,000. Great deal. Used a fella who was retired and sub’s out pools in the side. Went fine.

I will say, it doesn’t get used as much as I’d like. The first summer, yea, it was busy. I’ve got a teenage son who is in and out of it pretty regularly, but I’m not sure if he’d miss it I’d it was gone.

I won’t have another if I ever move

Negotiate a pool house and/or outdoor cooking area in the deal with her. You only live once. That's what I did a couple years ago and don't regret it.

Yes, IF you make the decision to spend the cash on a pool, dont skimp. Consider shade and evening sun. I built a nice pool but wish I wouldve added about 20% to the budget and got the few things I need. Namely an area for the kids to lounge that doesnt come into my cooking space/outdoor kitchen area of the patio. It is big enough, but it is kinda weird to have a ton of HS or Jr High kids up in my space. So my advice is, you are only doing it once, so get everything you want within reason. Hot tub, fountains, heater/chiller, structures.

We made the decision to do an above ground but I understand my situation isn't the same as everyone's. We live one 20 acres out in the sticks, the only way you would see my pool is if you were invited or you look on Google maps.

Went with a 18x33 oval pool, sand filter. It's been amazing, we use it a lot more often than we thought. It's especially nice for the convenience, want to just jump in and cool off, or swim for 20 minutes, done easy.

In the process of building a wrap around deck and outdoor kitchen area.

You made the right call if it works with your property. Only thing I’d miss is the full time cleaner (lots of trees here) and 550 sqft of cartridge filters. Spa can easily just be detached.
