Residential... Any suggestions on brand?.. Any problems buying from big box stores? Non zero turn is okay but would like to get one of those but hate the price...

Get a zero turn. Buck up and pay it. It’ll last much longer, specifically the belly.
I have a Toro. Works great at 3 years.

Scag. How much are you cutting will determine your model. Solid machines.

Deere x300 series was the most reliable and comfortable mower when it came out 20 years ago and it still is today even without any meaningful changes. Also has the commercial grade Kawasaki engine rather than the residential one. Raising the deck on the fly via pedal is great for high spots as well.
We have five in the extended family and all are perfect other than one that broke body panels mowing underbrush in the woods. Mine is missing a couple pulley covers on the deck from similar abuse.

Edit: only 2011-2020 have the FS series engines. Rest are FR or equivalent.

Bought a Toro Timecutter 42” right before summer and I love it! My Dad has the same mower it’s about 4 years old and never had an issue!

All I got is that I went to Walmart 17 years ago and bought the cheapest one they had.
Yard machines 38 inch deck.$899
Always stored it inside.
Mowed every week during season and every 2 days last 2 months.
Only replaced batteries, air filter, blades, belts(twice),spark plug, oil and a ball joint.
Replaced discharge chute a few weeks ago.
And used ethanol gas for 16 of those years.
Still using the same weedeater edger and mower the last 17 years.

I'm a zero turn guy, but I couldn't justify it with my yard only being an acre. I went with the 42inch cub cadet and couldn't be happier.

My Cub Cadet XT2 has been great. I mow just over an acre so I went with a lawn tractor versus the zero turn as well.

Problem with Cub Cadet is you have to disengage blades to back up, my old craftsman cut both ways and lasted 12 years

My XT2 allows you to cut in reverse, just need to engage reverse cut mode by pushing a button - not a hassle at all.

Ps.. love my XT2. Had it for several years and still running strong with zero problems, just basic maintenance.

I've had both Gravely and Hustler, both residential, and never had problems with either. I did find the Hustler more of a comfortable smoother ride. I cut 2.5 acres. Don't notice a difference in the actual cutting of the grass.

Where you located? I've got a Toro 4225 zero turn in nearly brand new condition that I'd sell.

Not a problem with my Cub Cadet XT2. You can mow in reverse.

I've had a Grasshopper and a Toro. The Grasshopper is about as nice as a mower as you could ever imagine. You can just sit on it and tell it's built better than pretty much everything else out there. No cheap plastic parts on it, but you pay a premium. The Toro was a good bit less but for just residential it has been a great mower, no complaints with it at all other than you can just tell overall it's not as solid as the Grasshopper, but I'm only cutting one yard a week, not 100.

Honestly, against all of the recommendations to the contrary, I bought a John Deere L135 from Lowes and I have not had a minute’s problem with it since I bought it nearly 20 years ago. When it is to\ime to buy another, I’ll go to Lowe’s and buy the same machine again.

I've 2 acres. Bought a Husqvarna YTH22V46 Lawn Tractor from Lowes three years ago. Haven't had any issues with it.
