I live in a 1200 sq ft house, and my HVAC just went out. For a 2 1/2 ton unit, they wanted 6 grand.
Damn, my upstairs main living area is just over 1600 sq. ft. and I replaced my 4 ton unit completely out and they had to make some ductwork to tie in my lines heading to the rooms.
This was 4 yrs. ago this spring and it was $6,500.
I'd hate to have to replace it today.

I have zero experience in HVAC, but this is me Googling parts.
You wouldn't need a new thermostat. A 5 ton condenser (the outside unit) is $3-5k, and an air handler that includes the evaporator coil is around $2k. If the ducting needs to be replaced, that's probably $500. I would assume another $1000 in miscellaneous lines/fittings/etc. So you're a little under $10k just in the bare minimum parts. Then there's the labor of removing the old stuff and installing the new stuff. You MIGHT be able to get it all done for a little over $10k.It's probably worth spending a little more on a reputable contractor, but I would be sus of anyone quoting over $15k.

You only have two vents in your house?

How willing are you to give hand jobs?
You might be able to negotiate.

I'm sure it's an inaccurate guess. Just looking at HD, it's $100/25ft for the nice R8 stuff.

I swore by Trane for years, unfortunately they are not what they used to be 5+ yrs ago.
5ton 14seer, you are looking at $12K, area dependent.

Anything LESS than 10 I would be suspicious of.
Mine was 10,500 but my attic is walk in access so tearing out and putting in process was minimal effort.
Less than 10 and they are trying to push less than new equipment on you or the guy is not certified or something. Also beware of guys who get scrubs from the Home Depot parking lot to do all the work while they “supervise”.

I doubt you need everything replaced. What’s wrong with it? I’ve only had to replace air handler inside. $4300 with tax on a 3 1/2 ton. We have 3 units and that’s the biggest one.

Had mine done for $5k a couple of years ago. Inside and outside.
Can’t tell you how. Just wanted to brag.

Yall are getting ripped of, I got 2 replaced last year, 5 ton American Standards , inside and out , $7800 for one without the furnace (gas and it was in good shape) $8,000 for one with electric heat (not a pump, just heat strips)
Posted on 4/1/25 at 6:08 pm to FLObserver
I replaced mine in December. 2 stage electric heat American Standard 12.5K

You may need multiple contractors looking at it. Possibly find someone who fixes things rather than replacing
Posted on 4/1/25 at 6:45 pm to FLObserver
5 ton in 2018 was $4900 for the mid of the line Amana with furnace. I had prices ranging from what I paid up to $12,000 for similar products.
You really need to get a bunch of proposals, not just three.
