re: Is $325 to come out and fill up your A/C unit with Freon a ripoff?

don't like the fact that they charge sales tax on labor,
They aren't charging it. They are collecting it on behalf of the state.
Some states require sales tax on service work. I can get quite complicated and many do it incorrectly and find themselves in a bit of hot water. In MS some services are required to collect sales tax and some aren't. A carpenter doesn't but a plumber does. It gets muddy when a handyman remodels a bathroom and installs a new toilet in the process. By the book he should break out the toilet portion and tax the labor. No ones does that shite though.

About a month ago, used AC guy suggested here, invoice was $250 for 2lbs added. They came out same day, tried to find leak but said didn't see anything obvious. It was for my daughters condo in BR. I appreciated that they came out same day, seemed very competent and were not creepy (daughter involved). I gave the guy $50 extra. I am a tightwad but some things (sweating and daughters safety) I will gladly pay extra for good service.

You aren’t supposed to top off the Freon. Something is leaking. Find it and fix it.

the honest truth is that its pretty outrageous to think that you thought this invoice was "a ripoff".

Google r422 d. About 375 per 25 lbs
I find it interesting HVAC guys complain about the cost of refrigerant. That's only $15/ lb. I'm currently being charged $65-85/ lb for 410 or whatever else.
That's a 300-500% mark up. There's not a lot of businesses that get away with that much of a mark up routinely. I'd rather someone charge me extra on the labor and service call than have a 500% mark up. But that's just me.

not faulting the business owner but thats like a Microsoft Excel 2000 invoice template.

it gets the job done so i'm not hating

This is in no way price gouging. You got a deal! I have heard of people paying over $500, especially for R-22. Pay that, and thank them profusely. I had an estimate for a weekend call to come fill mine, and it would have ended up being over a grand.

seems very cheap, im hearing old freon is a fortune b/c there is not much left.

"Freon" was Dupont's tradename for R-12. Amazing how that name has been attached to every refrigerant since 12 was phased out.

That is a pretty normal bill for R22 service nowadays. If you have an old R22 unit, begin saving up money to get your unit replaced.

I had a r22 system. It was $1000 damn near to fill and leak seal. I wasn't in town when it happened at wife used my credit card to pay. Supposedly a friend of a friend. I could have bought a tank of the freon for half that.
I was so pissed.

Labor is a taxable service.

Fridge mark up of r134a is insane. I pay $12 per 12 ounces. So a dollar an ounce. I'll charge $20oz to add in and I'm maybe the cheapest. But a fridge only holds 3-4 ounces total. .
