Is $325 to come out and fill up your A/C unit with Freon a ripoff?

I swear the last time I had someone come out to top it off years ago it was in the $100-$200 dollar range.
Is this one of those things that is just 100% more expensive than it was a few years ago or is this a rip off? I suspected my unit just needed refrigerant, the A/C guy confirmed that when he got out here and he was gone within half an hour.
It felt fishy to me that they didn’t want to write me up an invoice right there and then when they came out. instead they said they’d mail me an invoice and now I feel like the price gouging was the reasoning for that.

3lbs @ $56ea + a $135 call-out/service fee doesn't seem like price gouging.

We are not in Kansas anymore with pricing.
Everything associated with HVAC is much more expensive than the previous years. And there's no end in sight with government mandates.

56 bucks a pound sounds reasonable and the service charge you’re gonna pay probably almost anywhere

You have a leak somewhere in your system, most likely the evaporator coil.
Not sure how often you will need to keep filling it back up. But at some point repairs or replacement will be likely. That's when you will realize how much things have gone up.

Ok glad to hear that because I didn’t want to waste my time or theirs giving them a hard time if I couldn’t prove it was outrageous. I haven’t had to call anyone out to look at my unit in years but from what I can recall I think that’s the most expensive HVAC bill I’ve ever had outside of when I needed them to replace my unit. *Knocks on wood*

You'd have to pay me at least $100 just to drive an hour or so round trip out to a customer's house.

If you think that’s expensive wait till you have to get a new unit. Because with an R 22 unit, a new one shall be coming soon

When I called them during a weekday to come out they were literally at my house within 5 minutes which I was pleased with so it wasnt out the way.
I understand there’s a base fee for responding to a housecall no matter what it is though.

the honest truth is that its pretty outrageous to think that you thought this invoice was "a ripoff".

That price is the norm for a service call, labor, inspection, & adding freon. My bill was $475 in June as service was provided to 3 AC units and all 3 required freon. I do this service every spring as preventative maintenance for the Summer. Price was $250 for the same service 3-4 yrs ago.
edit to add: been using the same AC guy for 20+yrs and he is at my house within 4 to 24 hrs to service any reported problems.

I don't like the fact that they charge sales tax on labor, but the prices seem to be inline (but i like your 7% tax rate)

That’s fine. Would rather that be the case
Like I said can’t verify exact amount but I would swear it was about 100% more expensive this go round than the last time I called someone out to add Freon but that was easily 2-3 years ago

Having said that, how often should you be needing to top off refrigerant in your unit if there’s not a leak?

Never (in theory)

None, You need to call the company back and ask why the hell they didn't look for a leak.
HVAC is a closed system as in it doesn't use up refrigerant. Low refrigerant means you have a leak that you shouldn't have and that needs fixed. It could last you days or months you don't know.
But SOP for a leak is to do a leak test and figure out where it is. IF they can't find it, its often in the coils and they can't repair that so the coils need to be replaced.

Google r422 d. About 375 per 25 lbs. add in licensure, epa equipment, other supplies, etc., that’s not that bad.
Service call fee wasn’t bad either.

That caught my eye as well. I thought that wasn't done? or just in some states?
HVAC labor rates around here run 75-95 an hour.
