re: I'm considering getting home owners and auto insurance with State Farm.

State Farm’s auto insurance is ridiculously high. I dropped them years ago and went with USAA. Weirdly enough, it’s the opposite with homeowners. Even with losing the discount, it still made sense to drop them for auto.

A few things to remember, the insurance business is cyclical in terms of who offers the best bang for the buck, your agent can be a huge factor in how good or bad your interactions seem with the company, and today's heroes are tomorrow's zeroes in the insurance game.
Case in point, we had Geo Vera for wind and hail. They paid for a roof due to hail damage and were incredibly fair and reasonable about how that went I suspect they will go out of business if they haven't already due to their inability to properly pay out claims post-Ida.
We currently have all our policies with Farm Bureau. They offered us the best price for what we wanted and my agent is on top of everything, lets me know if he thinks there are ways I can save a little by changing deductibles, etc. The lack thereof is why we switched from other companies for both homeowners and car insurance. They were content to just keep taking our money without suggesting it might benefit us to alter a few things, in one case they actually neglected to suggest we recheck our flood certificate elevation because the maps changed as well as neglecting to list our home as our primary residence for flood insurance purposes. We had life insurance at FB already and the agent came back with much better quotes for us.
We have had State Farm, Shelter, Allstate, and Farm Bureau over the years (not in that order) for car and/or homes. For home, Shelter was very good and easy enough to deal with.
TO your original question, from my experience, State Farm was good to deal with regarding claims for car insurance.

My car insurance with them has gone up yearly with no claims. About to dump them

If you ever want a new roof via a hail damage claim you have virtually no chance. They are known in the roofing industry for this.
Can confirm first hand. Had hail damage to the roof and multiple lifted shingles after a storm in April. Had some more this past month with the last storm. State Farm said they can repair (looks like a Dalmatian now with the non sun faded shingles) while my neighbors are currently getting new roofs.
Roofer and adjuster met. Roofer basically said the only chance you have is to get an attorney involved with State Farm. Otherwise my roof would have been a complete replacement.
I will be shopping around in the next month.

My parents have State Farm in Baton Rouge and after Ida they lost about 200 shingles, had leaking roof in 3 rooms and under the patio, lost a fence and part of the gutters were ripped off. Roof needed to be replaced, water damage inside needed to be fixed and painted, new fence and new gutters.
They refused to send an adjuster out, over the phone adjuster wanted to value the loss at $2,300. I have an attorney friend that does a lot of hurricane related claims so he sent an independent adjuster out and they valued the loss at $62,000.
Of course, now State Farm wants to send an adjuster out and they still refuse to come off of any money. They still haven’t settled and we have a mediation schedule next month.
In short, I would not recommend State Farm

I'm just north of I-10 so we have State Farm for everything.
Two years ago...my home premium was $3100. Now it's $3650.
I'm having to put up a new roof myself this month just because I'm terrified SF will drop us if I make a claim and we'll be left with no options.

Don’t do it. Worst experience I’ve ever had with insurance. I had 5 cars and 2 homes insured with them for several years without any claims. Had some water damage from a hurricane and it took an act of congress to get an adjuster out to look at damage. After several weeks of waiting they didn’t want to pay for anything. Their business plan is to make things as difficult as possible until you give up.

I got a new roof due to hail with them, but it's been 12 years ago. No complaints, they were fast and fair with their coverage. But I also haven't had a claim since then, so no recent experience.

If you thought SF was high, wait until you quote USAA. USAA's business model is blind loyalty.
This is true. USAA is high as a cat's back. 20 years ago they were cheaper and had better service than other major insurers. They do pay well though.

I have a really good friend that owns a roofing company in Louisiana, he said that hands down, the all time worst insurance company to deal with is State Farm, for both the home owner as well as him as the roofer. He will tell anyone that listens to never touch state farm with a 10 foot pole.

I literally just dropped State Farm for auto and a investment property- I went with a local guy in Baton Rouge (broker) that could shop it around

This is not my experience. I recently shopped home and auto for me and USAA was the 2nd cheapest behind All State (I will never use them based on my cousins advice who was an adjustor for them).
Also shopped auto for my son, 20, and USAA beat everyone including GEICO, the General, Progressive..
We have few claims over 20+ years, but they went above and beyond when we needed them.
Everyone's situation is different, so always best to shop around.

I also have found that nobody can beat USAA for my cars and home. Some are close but the homeowners hurricane deductible is nowhere near as low as USAA’s is. 1% hurricane deductible really saved my arse after Ida. I’d have had to take from emergency savings after Ida if I still had State Farm or most others. State Farm is never getting my business again and I used to work for Allstate and will say this: I’d rather have my balls caught in a car door while the car is sinking slowly into the Mississippi River than to ever have anything insured by Allstate. What a horrendous company.

We've had both with State Farm for 43 years. Haven't had any exorbitant price increases on either the cars or the house. We are pleased with their service.

I’ve had car insurance with SF for probably 40 years now and can say that I have never had a bad experience when it is time for them to pay a claim. Probably not the cheapest…but do you really want the cheapest car insurance you can find?

Guess you never heard of State Farm’s treatment of homeowners after Katrina. Horrific
