I have between 15-20 of these in my shop that were left by the previous owners. Not plexiglass, actual glass about 3/8” thick and all full sheets with no cracks. Any project ideas?

I’ve been looking for ideas online without much luck, but have heard mentioning about plate/tempered. I honestly do not know. Is there a way to tell with an untrained eye?

Smash one, I suppose?

Seriously though, the edge faces of tempered glass are typically smoother to the touch. Plate glass edges usually feel rougher or perhaps jagged. Kinda tough to explain.

You can see the temper with polarized glasses. You can also tell by looking through the edge but that might take a little more practice.

It is too thin for a giant aquarium but would make some great terrarium fronts. Those guys are always looking for cheap glass to make insane enclosures.

Terrarium seems like a good idea, thanks!

Tempered glass edges will have a noticeable green tint to it at certain angles.

Better learn before you become a Squid Game contestant.

Way to tell:

Hockey glass is at least 5/8 inch thick and tempered.

Don't know if its still going on but there was a big price hike in glass from covid. Presumably because of a shortage. If its still going on you might be able to make some cash by selling to a local glass company. Though I imagine if its tempered it has very limited uses.

Almost all glass has a green tint to hit on the edge tempered or not. Color is not really useful in determining if glass is tempered or not.

Look in the corners for some verbiage that it's safety glass.

As for color, yep not a good way, some of the highest grades are crystal clear and cost considerably more. You can also look along the edges to see if there's some flaked off layers.

Only thing I can say is be extremely careful moving them if they are not tempered. Moving a sheet of that glass that size can be tricky. Very easy to break it and when that happens it becomes something of a guillotine for parts of your body. Do a few internet searches on people injured when moving large plates of glass.

Recently worked on something with Level 3 ballistic glass and I immediately wished I worked at UL.

Sounds fun.
