I think I have a racoon in my attic.

Kids heard a scratching at the attic door, then a thud, and heard it running over the ceiling. They said it sounded bigger than a squirrel. Any DIY ways to get rid of it, or should I just call a service?

I had that happen a couple of years ago. A mother racoon tore off the soffit vent and moved her babies in.

I ordered racoon urine online and spread it around in the attic. Some on rags and some on tennis balls I could throw in tight places. The articles I read said they would perceive it as a male racoon/threat.

I left the vent open until they had vacated and sealed it up after.

Look at your facia/soffit and you will see a hole if they are up there. I've put peanut butter coated rat poison block in the hole and that got them. The poison makes them thirsty and they go outside looking for water and die so they don't die in the attic. Get good rat poison from a pest control supplier, I use Contrac blox brand which is great for rat control too . I've tried putting a trap up there with peanubutter bait but never had luck with that

I have some rental properties so have experience with critters getting in attics and in pier&beam crawl spaces

Its probably a squirrel OP. I've had multiple squirrels and some rats in my attic, and it always sounds bigger than you think. I had a squirrel chew a hole in the very corner of my fireplace exterior trim and get to above my living room. It sounded like a damn black bear was scratching around.

You need to have people stand outside, and then go bang around in the attic and scare it out. Have the people outside look to see where it runs out of. Sometimes its very easy to find, other times very hard.

Trap and a can of tuna. Catch, release, and then seal off where they are getting in. They last 2 I caught stared me down from the outside of the roof for a few days

My youngest wanted a live trap for Christmas, so Santa brought him 2. We have caught several squirrels thus far. Suburban NW Houston...fugers are everywhere. One neighbor thinks they are cute. Another recently found a family living under the hood of his truck. Squirrels, not southerners, that is.

Couple night ago I swear I heard what sounded like scratching of decking in the attic. Hopefully not, but we have traps set. Have no mercy on those bastards. Probably need to set up a cell cam. Might just do that this weekend if we don't catch one before then.

Was possums for me. Trapped 14 in the yard. By the time I was sure the attic was clear and covered soffit vents, had to have the attic treated and some insulation replaced.

I raised 2 coons in my younger days...they absolutely loved the giant marshmallows.

Would probably make the perfect trap bait.

They do make a good bait. They look like eggs to the coon.

I know a guy who has a service. They use fish flavored cat food for traps.

99% chance it is a squirrel. A raccoon would require a hell of a hole to enter, but a squirrel can get through a very small hole. Get a rat trap (6” long) and bait with pecan. Go in the kitchen and start making a roux for the gravy!

Had squirrels getting in my fascia boards.

Set traps and shot every squirrel I caught in the head with a .22.

No more squirrels in my fascia boards.
