The only question is whether prices come back down now that Trump has changed the standards back to pre-Biden.

I just had a new one put in last week. In 2014 I paid $3600. Now I paid $6500 installed. But this one is a dual stage higher seer rating. Hoping it's more efficient. I only have a 3 ton so not sure how big you are getting for that price.

You could buy 50 window units instead.

Yep - I experienced the same, only the quotes were 2017 & 2023 - same company, identical unit, refrigerant, etc. As I recall, $8,900 to $13,900. 4-ton single stage Trane. Baton Rouge.

I also got 4 quotes in 2023, 3 diiferent HVAC manufacturers, small to medium companies (2 were owner + 1 helper; other several trucks, multiple techs), all with good reputations and 3 recommended by this board and all 4 quotes were within $1K of each other.

From this board I gather geographical location seems to be a big factor on quotes - Baton Rouge seems to be higher than many areas.

I’m still blown away you could get a a 2 stage unit for $6K installed, Even a single stage at that price. Where are you located? There is not that big of a price jump, equipment cost, going from 3 ton to 4 ton, even to 5 ton.

MS Gulf Coast. I use a guy that has his own business and only has one other employee. Low overhead. He does quality work and is an honest person.

Edit: I went to school with him years ago. He was a few years behind me but he may be giving me a friends and family discount. I don't ask. The price was good. Rheem Heat Pump, 3 ton inside and outside unit, dual stage, 14.3 seer 2, R454B refrigerant.

I watch a lot of Y/T videos of legit HVAC techs that have Y/T channels on service calls their diagnoses & repairs to units, I also read many of the comments which are from other techs that watch the videos.

I just recently learned from one of these videos that many HVAC service companies are apparently being bought by private equity investors (like housing) and driving up prices of installs - hard push by PE investors to have the HVAC companies sell customers new systems if “old”, as opposed to repairing them.

Something I wasn’t aware of and would like to learn more about.

I’m gathering that HVAC pricing is like buying a mattress - the wholesale price of the equipment is not unreasonable all considered, but there is a whole lot wiggle room on install labor.

In jest, but it would definitely drive the prices down to sensible amounts.
