I live in Mandeville. Anyone know the price difference for installation of a traditional hot water heater vs tankless?

A few years ago I was quoted $3k for a thankless. Stuck with the tank as it was more economical and easier to replace/fix

Bought a house in June. Water heater went out in August. That thing was installed in 1988 and of course went out 6 weeks into me being in the house.
Got a quote to replace the 50 gallon gas tank water heater for $2800 or $4500 to put a gas tankless in the attic.
Went tankless. Works great so far.
This is in Baton Rouge fwiw

Standard water heater will most definitely be cheaper. When I built my house I wanted tankless but my builder talked me out of it as I didn't have gas. So keep that into consideration. They could be better now, but I haven't looked into it.

It depends on your particular situation, but it's going to be a factor of several times more cost vs replacing whatever exists currently. If you go through so much hot water that your current setup can't keep up and there is no room for a larger tank then it might be worth the cost.

gas or electric?
i have to say our last house had a gas naveen with the recirculator and it was the BOMB. big family; teenage daughter...having instant, never-ending hot water no matter how many people were taking showers at the same time was absolutely amazing.
i miss that thing
we have no gas at the new house other than a 110 gallon propane tank and the prior owner had just installed a brand new 80 gallon water heater so no way i can justify swapping it out.

Obligatory... why do you need to heat your hot water? Make it extra hot?

I’m going conventional tank bc of cost. Ours is not a big home and we prob won’t be living here full time after 5 more years. Replace thermocouple two years ago but tank is 2009 model. Prob installed in 2011 when house was gutted and remodeled. I don’t have rust and don’t know if anyone has drained tank as preventative maintenance. I’m planning to replace when kids go away for vacation.
Any recommendations on Baton Rouge companies?

Most people are better off with just a tank. There is a fad of tankless to go along with standby generators but most people with be just fine with a tank at 1/3 the cost.

I had a rheem condensing 200k btu tankless installed this year and 50 gallon tank removed for $2600. All in the attic.
