We are looking at installing outdoor security cameras around our new construction house. Our AV guy recommends Ring and DAHUA. We want ease of use, good picture quality and user friendly.

Reolink is pretty good. It’s what I have and it has worked well for us.

I have Ring devices around my whole outside of my house. Spotlight and floodlight. Doorbell went out when house got struck by lightning. App is very easy to use and cameras work as they should. Could tie in with their security system if that was something you were interested in.

I got several eufy cams and really like them.

I work with them in my overall smart home environment and they’ve been solid.

They have a nice thermostat too.

Whatever brand the guy had on his Fourchon camp’s porch during Hurricane Ida. Can’t find the video or brand, maybe others recall.

Your A/V guy is suggesting you buy some over the counter, DIY stuff you can get at Home Depot?

Sounds like a wizard.

We have hik-connect at the new house, had Lux before.

The hik ones are better and offer peripherals as well. We have their doorbell and it all ties into the same dvr and app

Get the best level camera you can afford.
You'll always wish you had 4k level.
Further, you're gonna want enough cameras.

So, bottom line you need quality AND quantity.

I imagine many of these cameras are made in random Chinese factories and many probably have similar electronics, etc.

Ine suggestion could be to get one with the NVR to have multiple ports, more than the total number cameras you start with. Example, get a 16 port NVR that comes with 8 cameras.

If new construction, I'd certainly go wired at least for power. I have the wireless ARLO system, no monthly fee, free storage (up to 7 days) and easy to use/set up and no issues for several years. Not sure if newer systems have free limited storage,

Dahua makes great cameras. Many brand name cameras, such as Amcrest, are just rebranded Dahuas; same thing for HikVision (rebranded as Annke and many others).

Reolinks are good only if you are using all Reolink products, including their NVR. If you try to add Reolinks to other systems, you will have a shitty experience with motion and object/person detection.

Similar comment for Ring: If you are going all Ring ecosystem, go for it.

I'd 100% go POE cameras over wireless, invest in a nice NVR that doesn't tie you into a certain brand of camera and you'll be good.

What does this mean? Can you please explain in layman’s terms?

POE is Power over Ethernet, one network cable
Provides power and communication to the camera.

NVR is Network Video Recorder, it’s basically a digital version of a VCR to record what the camera sees. They are networked so you can access them remotely if configured correctly and you can share the recordings electronically via app or email.

My two cents is this sort of setup can be expensive and get complicated very quickly for non-techie folks. I’d suggest looking at some of the other cloud based service for recording, but there are drawbacks in that most don’t do loop recording and only capture motion.
