Neighbor has about a 20-foot-tall cypress tree in their yard, and the knees have crept at least 10 feet into my yard. Beautiful tree but it feels like I am mowing around a field of landmines. Recently I had to replace a set of blades due to being bent by hitting one of the knees.

Can I grind the knees down and put some type of stump rot on them to keep them from returning? Will the stump rot kill the tree?

Yep. I used to cut them out vertically until I took out a sprinkler pipe.

Start the conversation with the neighbor. Remain level headed during the conversation and state your case. See where it goes from there.

I cut them on either side of the knee and putt them up.

Neighbor has 3 next to our fence. I haven’t sprayed the knees with triclopyr yet, but I sure would like to.

I use something like this:

After a few years I got a mini excavator and dug them up.

I do the same with a sawsall - they pop out the ground very easily with minimal effort.

What he said. They are like torpedo grass. Roots grow outward away from tree, Then knee pops ups Cut on both sides then angle under for the small tap roots..

Do not use stump rot. It’ll travel right up the root system and absolutely kill your neighbor's tree, which makes you legally liable if it dies.

Had 2 cypress trees at my old house. Once a year id go around the yard with a pick axe. One swing on each side of the knee would do it.

My dad had this problem every two years he went to AAA and rented a small stump grinder and ground them down with no apparent harm to the main trees

Grind/cut them down, and then run over them with the mower every single time you mow. Cypress is very soft and slow growing. A little shave every now and then wont be noticeable on the mower.

I have i think 8 cypress trees on one side my yard and this is what I do. No issues for the tree or the mower.

Dont spray them. High risk of killing the tree.

I have exact same situation. I took a sawzall to them a few months ago.

Only difference in my situation is that the offending neighbor has an All American plaque hanging outside Tiger Stadium and I like the guy
