Bought a Belgian Browning A5 from an old farmer that only used the gun to shoot hawks that were killing his chickens. Times have changed. Probably my favorite gun that I own.

Killing redtail hawks is a federal crime 
And on top of that, kind of shitty. They're awesome. Just get something to protect the chickens so they don't even attempt to grab them.

I've noticed that my chickens like cover. They hardly go anywhere that isn't covered by our big oak tree. Go through roosters until you get a good one. Ours keeps his eyes to the sky, and will huddle the chickens up in a small wooded area if he sees a hawk.
If I didn't have the tree cover, I would put up some bushes or a shade sail for them to hide under. Maybe a few elephant ears.

coincidental but i'm dealing with the same thing. was cutting grass saturday mid day with the sun high above and there was a big shadow circling, looked up and it was a big ole hawk flying around. didn't think anything of it other than that's an awesome bird.
then sunday i was walking through my garage and i could hear one of my cocks crow then a weird sound from one of my hens. happened twice, the kind of sound that makes you stop and pay attention. mind you they're 250' from my house. so i walked out the back and saw the hawk flying off to some cypress trees and my flock huddled up next to their coop under a tree. thankfully everyone survived but i'm sure i'll go home one day and one will be missing... they free range all day and are getting brave. hopefully this will keep them close.

I just built a bigger run for mine. About the time a hawk got one, i got tired of them tearing up the yard, anyway. Covered the run with bird netting where there is no tree cover. Which led to one day a bigger cooper's hawk circling above, thinking he was smart. He dove down and hit the netting, shot back up, feathers flying like he hit a trampoline in a bugs bunny cartoon. haven't seen him since

Put a dozen chickens in an 8 x 10 chicken tractor and see how fast they can scrape up the grass looking for things to eat.

i understand. nobody got time to move a chicken tractor multiple times per day. also, 80SF is way too small for 12 chickens.

Get a black chicken. All black. Has helped our flock out.
We got two Ayam Cemani hens.
Apparently they think it is a crow and they hate crows.

I don't know if it was just coincidence or not but every time I lost a chicken to a hawk it was in the morning hours. I started letting them out no earlier than 3PM and haven't lost one to a hawk yet. If that is the case my only guess is that they do most of their hunting in the mornings. Just a complete guess though.

Did the same. Netting over a larger chicken run. We’ve got two full blooded Great Pyrenees, they are not bird dogs. We’ve had zero losses and more eggs than we know what to do with.

Go buy a giant bag of raw peanut in the shell. Put them out for crows. Once you get crows coming around. Hawks will disappear.

I saw someone on tiktok that recruited and trained black birds and they attacked the hawks whenever they came by
