With the impending freeze or whatever is happening in a couple days, what precautions, in general, should i take from protecting my plants/trees from a freeze? We had a freeze last year and i put a layer of clear visqueen on the plants for a day or 2. It ended up killing some of the plants, but they regrew after a month or so. Want to avoid that this time.

List of items needing protecting (maybe):

Young fig tree
Young crepe myrtles
ornamentals
azeleas
boxwoods
other shrubs

If you use Visqueen you may need to take it off during the day. It can heat up in there too much. I use old moving blankets, drop cloths, old comforters and things like that. Also make sure you are creating a tent that covers the ground around the plant.

All that stuff you listed should be fine. You may get some freeze burn on leaves but that's not a big deal. It's more important to protect the roots so adding a 2" thick layer of mulch helps. If leaf burn bothers you, try to find plant freeze cloth which is better than plastic.

All you listed should be ok. Trees, azaleas, boxwoods unless brand new transplants, will tolerate the cold snap. Only question I have is what kind of ornamentals? The rest are fine.

Don’t use plastic use weed blocker you buy it by the roll it’s that same material used in plant covers for this very purpose

Lil redneck ingenuity, I’m in south ark and bought two satsumas that were developed by a professor at Texas A&M that can withstand 12 degrees. It’s supposed to be 4 degrees here Monday night smdh. I put heating lamps in there and draped tarps over them. The base of the trees are wam but the leaves still have ice. I’m gonna put two bales of hay under the tarp, maybe it will help with some heat retention, this shite is for the birds.

What about temps below 20 degrees?
I have Fox ferns, flax Lilly, gardenias, and hibiscus. Forecast might get to 10-15 degrees Tuesday morning. Should I be covering everything?

I think those are the "Artic Freeze" Satsuma's. I bought a couple for my father last year and they have done really well. They have bushed out quite well since planting last march.

We are now forecasted for -1 Monday night in central AR. I'm guessing I'll have to cover every damn thing I have.

I have an unknown Satsuma in Alexandria up against the rear of my brick garage(South side). Do I need to do anything for 11* low?

I think I would. I used to build a tent out of blue tarps and tomato stakes over my orange tree at my old house and put a small electric space heater in the tent. Held up against the 10 degrees we had a few years ago

Home Depot has protected tree covers just inside the front door. They have a rip cord to pull tight and are breathable. Think $14.00 and reusable. Highland store.

I just covered two small Meyer lemons at my house and have to go cover 4 more in East Feliciana.

Of yours I would definitely cover the fig tree. Others should be hardy enough.

Do Chinese fringe trees need protection? In the front yard completely exposed to the N/NW wind. Just lost most of it's leaves.

I did this at my house, its under the tarp. I also put two bales of hay under the tarp near the heating lamp for heat retention. I used heating lamps instead of space heaters.

I have some acerola cherry trees. Would it be beneficial to put visqueen around the base of the tree? I just mulched them last week. In at work and won't make it to store.

Gardenias should be fine. Hibiscus typically will be done for. They are hard to keep during the winter. Not sure about the other two.

I have knock-out roses, sunshine ligustrums, and shi shi camellias. Shoukd I worry a out covering them or just hope all the rain insulates the roots? I'm looking at 16 degrees for the low Monday night. I don't recall covering them at all the past couple winters.
