$4K to install a Mitsubishi mini - split AC to keep my 2 car garage at 74 degrees all year long with not humidity/condensation in it…..

Adds 800 sq. Ft of function-able AC space to house.

Seem like bad idea???

Do you do anything in your garage? If so, it may be worth it. Not paying 4k to keep my vehicles comfortable though

If money isn’t an issue why would it be a bad idea?

Your Kia doesn’t need to be climate controlled.

I have a heater in my 800 sq ft garage - it's fantastic - makes the space usable all year. I debated on an AC unit - and it just wasn't worth it. The garage holds heat really well - without the heater it never really falls below 50 degrees. Cooling the thing would be an expensive nightmare

I might toss a window unit in mine but I'm definitely not paying 4k to cool it.

I have a 250+ sqft room attached to the garage that has ac. It has a 3/4 bathroom. That's nice, but no need for ac in the garage portion. Would be nice at times, but no need.

Look at insulating that garage door. Your electric bill will thank you.

$4k seems expensive, what is that for a 3 ton unit?

A window unit if you can mount one will knock the edge off. I had one in the shop attached to my garage in my last house, just a small 5k-6k unit and it would freeze me out if I left it on even during the summer. It is way cheaper. If you spend a lot of time in your garage it is worth it, I had my reloading stuff out there and would sit at the bench for hours sometimes.

Is your garage insulated? Garage doors insulated?

I found that makes a huge difference in my current house vs the last one. I also have a bonus room above the garage that keeps it further insulated.

If you’re looking for feedback on the Mitsubishi Mini-Split, I have a 2T unit in the bonus room and it’s fantastic.

I spent a few hours yesterday in the garage using a Miter saw while standing in front of the mini split.

It was 70 in the garage vs like 95 outside.
Granted, my garage is insulated with a insulated garage door. But, its way better than melting.

You can cool 800 sq. ft. with a 25K BTU window unit that will cost you under $1000. Of course it will probably cost around $150+ a month to run it when it is hot out.

My shop is a measly 240sq foot. However. I insulated it and put a window unit in there set to 75 and “dry” and it keeps it very comfortable. Highly recommend as it’s nice to work on stuff in there versus the blazing heat or more recently, rain every day.

That is not a bad price for an install. It will also keep your warranty.

I just got 2 mini splits installed in a house. A 2 ton unit and another unit that actually has ducts. Your install price is perfectly fine.

They have basically an away/economy mode where it will hover around 77f and monitor everything at a low speed. You can also crank them the hell up and cool down a room like that in no time
