Okatsune makes wonderful hand tools. It is made from Japanese steel. I love their pruners and pair them with a Felco leather holster. I believe Amazon sells fake Okatsune. I purchase from A.M. Leonard.

I just bought that root knife. No idea why I don't own one. I need one often.

I much prefer a pick mattock to a pickaxe for digging.

Huh, didn't realize the difference until now. Looks like what I bought was actually a mattock after all

Yes that’s a mattock, great tool.

Love my hori hori, but find myself using my Dewit Potting Trowel more for planting anything bigger than seedlings. I find its size to be perfect.
Trowel

And absolutely love my Japanese weeding sickle. You can weed quickly but with precision. Has held up to a fair amount of abuse and is esay to resharpen

My dad's old blade shovel. It is priceless to me for various reasons, but the functionality is unmatched. I keep an edge on it that can probably cut a sheet of paper with. You can't find these in stores anymore. I take care when using it, because if it breaks, I'm screwed. Easily over 50 years old.

I’ve been needing a shorter, D handle nursery spade for years (I’ve been using a short utility shovel I got at an army surplus store) so I bought an AM Leonard steel spade and it is amazing

If you transplant a lot it is so much easier than a shovel

Favorite: Kershaw Camp 10. Not quite a machete and not quite a kukri. All the weight is in the top of the blade and it just demolishes things. My favorite use for it is whacking the top off of a coconut.

Just bought one of these to use at my farm. I’m in kudzu killing mode and this will be very handy to use with the Craig Harper cocktail.

ETA: was on Amazon for $50

I have a small yard but tons of flowers. This thing has been money for me carrying bags of mulch, soil, heavy plants and pots , picking up cut palm fronds. Just very handy

This thing does great fluffing up the mulch, digging up weeds and all kinds of other odd jobs. Very handy

I too like Japanese garden tools. Helps a bit with joint pain. My favorites are hand hoes and sickles. I like selection, prices and service at Hida Tools LINK The shop specializes in cabinet making tools but has many garden items. Skip the fancy wood handles to save some money.

One tool that I've found that I've been using a decent amount of time since I bought it is a root shovel.

I don't have to dig too often but just regular digging seems to be much easier. I had to replace a couple of sprinkler heads on Sat and used it, and it just seems to cut through the dirt and grass roots so much easier.

And if you do have roots, it cuts through them pretty easily. I had some dead arborvitae that I cut down and dug up and it was fairly easy with this shovel.
