I’m in South Louisiana and am planning to dig a pond and use the dirt to fill in low spots and put a nice slope away from our house and shop. I’m on 5 acres and planning for the pond to be about 75’x110’ with a depth of around 8-10’. Does anyone that has been through a similar process have any advice or a do/don’t list?

Install an overflow pipe to prevent overfilling. This is usually a 8 inch PVC pipe that drains into a nearby ditch.

Im on 5ac with a .80acre pond. I wish I would have done it different, its basically a big arse 15ft deep bowl in my back yard.

Dos: add structure such as dips and ledges
Pour a load of limestone in before water, helps with water clarity
Add structure to the bottom BEFORE you full it up
Add a conduit line for electricity
Add a drain pipe as said above.
Add minnows 6-8mths before perch/bream NO BASS yet!
Add perch and wait 8mths to a year
Add bass
You can also use pond dye, I did to mine and its a pretty blue green color

Donts:
Dont add 8” bass like my dumbass did as the first fish in the pond, they eat every damn thing I have put in it since.
Any of the opposite from the above list, only thing I got right was the damn drain pipe

Good luck

Call the local office of the NRCS and ask for some free technical advice.

What kind of advice are you looking for, exactly?

The recommendation to go to NRCS is only going to go so far. They will give you a report showing clay content of the soil, and maybe assist with a pond design (based on their specs), but beyond that, they aren't going to make any recommendations for setting up your land for your house and shop.

One problem few consider, you have to have sufficent runoff from around your pond into your pond to maintain certain water levels.

Would probably post this to the Outdoor board for more responses.

Who was the guy on the OB 5-10 years ago who posted a pic of his “pond” and became a running joke?

There is some guy from Alabama on YouTube that has some great pond digging videos. Can’t think of his name, but his channel is pretty popular.

This guy's channel is awesome. Definitely worth checking out if you plan to build a pond the right way. Here is the link to one of his first videos while building his backyard pond.
