I'll echo capacitors and throw in relays. I've had those go bad on me.

I have a capacitor and contactor on hand. I had a contactor fail this summer due to ants.

Buy an American made capacitor to keep on hand - AmRad makes good ones, you’ll need to open up the service panel on the condensing unit to determine what size you need - that info is not going to be in the paperwork you have.

That’s a pretty common issue for contactor failure though it’s not happened to me. Perhaps the solid state contactor, suggested by bapple I think, is worth considering.

Like others, I keep a spare capacitor and contactor (some refer to it as a relay).

yes, there's usually a run capacitor and a start capacitor...sometimes they are joined together in one package with 3 terminals however

The inside blower/fan also has a capacitor

Capacitors are one of the most common repairs needed, but honestly OP its not as often as people like to think. Furthermore, its only an issue if it goes bad at night or on the weekends.

They are inexpensive $15-20 so its not a terrible idea at all. But honestly I'm not sure I'd sweat it, you may have the capacitor go out once in 15-20 years of service.

Only if it’s a PSC blower motor (AC motor) which is the norm on “older” units, but most newer HVACs furnaces or air handlers (I think since 2020) have EMC blower motors (DC motor) which don’t have a capacitor.

Honestly,, you are likely to buy a bunch of parts that you’ll never use. I would just buy a small window unit that you can also use in case of hurricanes or better yet, just plan to spend the night in a hotel in the unlikely event your central AC ever goes out.

Truth. Caps are easy to replace, I with someone like an Autozone sold them as there's only about 15-20 sizes at most and they don't take up much shelf space. The only crappy thing about Caps going out is most places that sell them are only open M-F 9-5.

Good memory - yea I'm a big proponent of the Emerson Sureswitch. Super quiet compared to the *thunk* of a standard contactor/relay coil closing and has brownout protection built in as well. They're also designed to handle considerably more cycles compared to a standard contactor since the contacts are less likely to pit from arcing.

These are considerably less likely to go bad since they're essentially climate-controlled being inside the air handler.
The one outside will see much more heat and cold being outdoors.
