Long story short, the wife (no pics) wants a flowering tree in our side yard. It gets almost full sunlight all day. What are my best options. She likes dogwoods, but I didn’t have good luck with one at the old house.

Look into Shoal Creek Vitex and see what your wife thinks. LINK

Dogwoods are having many diseases issues that kill them overtime, and many garden centers have stopped selling them for that reason.

Sweetbay Magnolia....native tree that is an evergreen.

Small flowers about 3-4 inches across.

I love the shoal creek Vitex too.

My wife also wants one outside our window. They should attract all the things you’d want to see. Bees, Butterflies, and Hummingbirds.

I saw it on an LSUag write up so you know it’ll work here.

I have two Vitex in my yard. They maintain themselves. Very pretty when in bloom. They do have brittle limbs with a lot of dying ends but that is no reason to avoid them.

Not sure how well redbuds do in Louisiana, but they flower pink in April, and the leaves transition from green to red to yellow throughout the year

Beautiful tree. I believe Crawdude has recommended it before.

Redbuds do well in LA. I have a Forest Pansy cultivar and the Rising Sun cultivar (grafted) is the one with the pretty yellow, orange, green mixture of leaves.

I didn’t suggest redbuds to the OP, although it’s a great small understory tree, because the flowering season is so short - maybe a couple weeks, but they really pop out during that short flowering period.

There is another redbud cultivar called Flamethrower developed by NC State that I recently learned about that has a combination of red, orange, yellow, green leaves - very attractive as well. I need to try to find a spot in the yard for one of those.

Just noticed a redbud on a walk this evening. WOW.

Also saw a house with both Shoal Creek Vitex and Redbud. WOWWWW!

Your wife would probably like crape myrtle.

We have many in our large yard and like them.

Really cool tree. How does it do in clay dense soil? How do you suggest amending the soil?

Interestingly I don’t have one myself, but I just had a dwarf ever bearing mulberry tree/shrubs that appears to have succumbed to stem borers so a spot has opened up in my yard - I’m thinking Shoal Creek Vitex or Rising Sun Redbud as a replacement for that spot. I have heavy clay soil.

To answer your answer your question, I think they do fine in heavy clay soil - have friend in Breaux Bridge and all his neighbors have Shoal Creek Vitex growing in heavy clay soil - when they all come in bloom simultaneously it is a show stopper.

Do not amend the heavy clay soil, just be sure when you plant it to have the top of the root ball 4 to 6 inches above lawn grade. Make the planting hole at least 2 times wide as the root ball diameter, and no deeper than the bottom of the root ball when projecting above lawn grade. It’s OK to use some bagged garden soil around the root ball projecting above lawn grade if you are short excess dirt from the planting hole.

Big Leaf Magnolia (if they grow there). I believe it and yellowwood are my favorite trees.

Just went and looked at the tag and it said to plant even with the grade. Why do you recommend 4-6" above grade?

Seconds on two of the flowering native trees: mayhaw (earliest white blossoms in spring with red fruit later) and sweetbay magnolia (large white flowers in late spring that are wonderfully fragrant).
