I recently received a quote to have my MIL's mobile home bathroom renovated to remove the tub/shower combo and install a simple walk-in shower. Like a kit that you can get at Lowe's.

What should a job like that cost?

So, what was the quote cost?
Also, I don't think it's that simple. A walk in will likely require more area.
Either way, my guess is ~$10K

The area is 54"x32" . The most expensive one Lowes sells if $1500.

For a basic Lowe's kit in a mobile home, labor usually runs anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500 depending on if they have to adjust the plumbing or repair the subfloor. Did the quote you got include all the materials, or was that just for the labor?

The quote was for labor and materials. Said it might take 2 days start to finish to complete.

well obviously that’s high. Get another quote. I would think 5-7.5 would be fair

14k is insanely high. Just converted a tile shower to a tub/shower combo kit myself. Had to jackhammer slab to redo plumbing. About 2k in materials.

Get a second quote. Don’t tell them anything. Just say wife wants another look. Do that 2 more time and you will know. Make sure it’s itemized. If anyone gives push back, move on.

I definitely will.

How much labor costs could I save her if I demo’d the old tub out and had it ready for the new install?

Any time I get a quote for work I ask them is there anything I can do on my part to reduce this price. Ask them about the demo. Tell them to price it both ways. One with demo and one without.

Good in theory, but once they have an inkling you might want to do the demo yourself, they usually only allocate a very small portion to demo and the remainder is materials and “highly skilled” labor. I have seen this exact scenario many times.

Rightfully so the demo of a tub shouldn’t take more than a few hours at best.

I’m not arguing that, what I’m saying is sometimes contractors don’t give their true numbers when asked about a particular task if they feel they might miss out on some of the job.
Hope I made myself clear, but I probably didn’t.

Not a tub conversion, but at our old house we got a quote to replace a walk-in fiberglass shower. Guy tried to upsell us on some fancy wall material, said tile was a terrible idea and that no one uses tile anymore (our new house has a beautiful tile shower)

Fella wanted $11k. I couldn't believe it.
