How effective is the radiant barrier on reducing attic temps? I

In June when it was 100 degrees outside my attic was 108. I also have dark shingles, lots of ridge vents and all the soffits are perforated vinyl. I was happy it was only 8 degrees hotter than outside.

Why don't shingles reflect that mess? Seems dumb not to. Dammit.

This article explains why…it’s physics.

I get that, I mean why not have the shingles be what reflects the energy off the primary surface. Not directly under hot shingles.

What is the consensus on radiant barriers and how they affect roof underlayment, decking and shingles themselves?

Does it make any difference at all? Are they getting that much heat anyway? Is the barrier sandwiching extra heat between the shingle and the barrier?

Although shingles can get hotter with the presence of a radiant barrier research studies in FL show that they do not shorten the life of the roof. That information is on-line.

Whether it truly impacts it or not, do shingle mfgs warranty the product with radiant barriers installed? I honestly don’t know. That would be my primary concern.

I’m thinking about setting up a little experiment to prove the radiant barrier concept to myself. I understand the science but I’m still a skeptic.
