We had a huge tree in our front yard that shaded most of the roof during the summer months but Ida took out most of it so we have lots of sun on our roof all day long, leading to a hotter house. I want to install radiant barrier in the attic but I've heard that some people have had issues with cell phone reception with that installed in the attic. Is there any truth to that?

Glad to hear it. I have it in my new build and was concerned. Last house had my HD antenna in the attic for the locals but I heard that is not going to work. So I guess that will be mounted on the back side.

Damn good question…I can’t say I would have thought of that.

I have it my house we just built and my reception sucks. I have to go sit outside to have a conversation on the phone. Admittedly though, my end of the street I live in already has poor service so that’s probably not helping.

We have thermoshield decking on our roof in the last two houses.

Cell coverage was arse in both. Installed google mesh routers with wifi calling and it is the tits.

Do this.

Cell towers in residential areas are typically less than 200 feet tall, and radiate their signals on a horizontal plane. Unless you are living in the shadow of the cell tower the signals are passing through the walls of your house, not the roof.

We have it and get no service in our house. All you have to do is turn on wifi calling on your smartphone. Get a strong WiFi network and you’ll never have a problem. You will have to give your wifi password to all of your guests.

We got an Orbi mesh system with 4 transmitters that we placed around the house. No problems anymore.

Cell reception is better outside but it's ok inside. don't know if that's just a function of the house or attributed partly to radiant barrier as well. would still be worth it to me if there was no signal.

just moved. about 5 miles down the road. new house has barrier on osb. old house had none. temp was about 110 in old attic. it's high 80s in New house. obviously makes a huge difference in AC efficiency.

I have it in mine and had to buy a Wilson booster kit for the attic to get decent cell coverage in the house. I'm rural with no internet fwiw.

Used it on ceiling and walls. Just install an exterior booster. Problem solved.

Definitely, need a booster, or 2. Can’t hear shite inside. Fine if I walk out onto the patio.

I'm tempted to do this, but my roof is not very workable for it. I have 30 feet of no-attic roof on the west side, no shade at all. That is the side that needs it most. Why don't shingles reflect that mess? Seems dumb not to. Dammit.

And notice the majority of shingled roofs are darker or black. We put the biggest heat absorbing things on the area that gets all the sun.

Probably won't affect cell or wifi since those frequencies are high enough, but HF (3-30MHz) signals won't penetrate it. I know lots of ham operators that curse radiant barriers because they live in HOAs and have to put their antennas in the attic, only to realize the radiant barriers block their signals.

AM radio might be affected, but stations like WWL will still come through, just because of the output power of that station....if you live close enough.

How effective is the radiant barrier on reducing attic temps? I have a high slop roof with dark shingles. Attic and bonus room are absurdly hot

No issues for 7 years now. All the houses in my neighborhood built with it. No complaints.

According to everything I’ve read on the subject, 15 to 20 F drop if installed properly.
