All the toilets in my house are starting to give me issues

The floats are sticking in the up position so the tank is getting refilled. Have to jiggle the handle, sometimes pretty forcefully. Is there a way to lubricate these or do they need to be replaced?

They're cheap enough to be replaced. Do you have hard water by chance? You could probably take the tank off and work the float by hand forcefully to knock off some calcium, but eventually they'll need to be replaced.

Someone might have done an upper decker in all of your toilets also.

You can also remove the chain and handle and give it a good scrub. There is likely deposits around where the handle assembly goes through the tank. Then give it some grease and reinstall it.

Replace all the innards, it's easy.

Fill valve assembly is about $15 and YouTube has DIY instructions.

Float sticking it the “up” position means the tank shouldn’t be filling at all and the handle shouldn’t affect it at all. Are you sure you don’t mean the flapper is sticking? Is the toilet running all the time until you jiggle the handle?

Sorry I meant isn’t getting refilled. Typo. The float is getting stuck in the up position. Basically it’s not sliding back down the post so it thinks the tank is full and won’t refill it. I jiggle the handle because it knocks it loose and falls back down. I can replace them, not an issue, but just wondering if I could just put some kind of lube on them instead.

I had one doing that and sprayed some silicone spray on it to fix it. Silicone spray can be bought at Lowes or Home Depot and is sold as “garage door lubricant.”

Yeah I guess you could lube it, but generally speaking the plastic and rubber in your toilet parts just starts to degrade from the minerals and chemicals in the water.

I’ve been through this lately and just replaced 2 toilet float systems for less than $20 each. Shop vac the water out and it’s pretty quick.

Go to the hardware store and get new fill valves (aka ballcocks). I think the most popular is the universal Fluidmaster 400A.

Might as well replace the supply lines while you’re at it. Remember to take the old ones so you get the proper length and fitting type.

Just so happens my BIL master plumber (40+ years) is in the house so I asked him. He said replace them (fill system guts, not the toilet), and if possible with the same unit currently in the toilet (OEM). Model number of the toilet is usually on the underside of the lid.

I swear I went the first 40 years of my life without having toilets fail, but now it seems like every year or two I have to replace the toilet guts.
Damn things always end up running whether I change it myself, or have a plumber do it.
Are all these kits just crap?

Is there a quality kit out there besides the Home Depot/Lowes stuff?
