Op get 3-5 quotes at least. NEVER get just one quote for a major HVAC job in the summer.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing - honestly I was expecting about 8-10K. Sure as hell not going with one quote. We can easily manage for a bit staying in other parts of the house, no big deal.
I was wondering if a package unit was more or less expensive.

Are you in a hurry for it to be replaced? I could do it for a lot less but it will be 6 weeks or so before I could.

Package should be slightly cheaper than a splint, imho.
After more bids, let us know what you get.

Shop for an Amana system, they have the best warranty and are great units. I got my 5 ton inside unit and outside unit plus installation for only $5k. It’s going on 5 years now and hasn’t skipped a beat. Lifetime warranty on the compressor and ten year warranty on everything else. I can pass along who did mine if you are interested.

He doesn’t have a split system. The AC, heater and air handler is outdoors in a single package.
ETA: $5K was a good price, though. What was the SEER rating?

Did they at least give you a reach around when they quoted that?

For a frame of reference I paid $5,500 for a complete (condenser, compressor, furnace, evaporator coil) new 3 ton 16 SEER Trane and that included a UV light two months ago.
Typically duct work costs $1500 for average size home.
A 4.5 ton unit or 5 ton 16 SEER Trane would be around 8K.
You must be looking at a variable speed 20-22 SEER Trane system for $12K,plus 1,500 ductwork, plus $800 for zoning system.
Sounds like your getting ripped off. This tells me they are not an authorized Trane dealer if they are offering American Standard.

They are exactly the same ac now. They are made in the same factory with the same parts, just different branding.
ETA if you are curious
quote:
Here’s a question we’re asked by customers who are fresh off their computers after Googling air conditioner brands. Is the Trane better than the American Standard, or is the American Standard better than the Trane?
The answer is that they are very similar and are also owned by the same parent company, Ingersoll Rand. Both brands are manufactured in the same facility and with the same parts. They are just branded differently. ?
So that leads to another questions is why the Trane brand can cost a little more. For dealers that sell this brand, they pay into a co-op fund that is used to market the brand. This is something that other industries, like car dealerships, also have to do. And that’s how it’s absorbed into the price of the Trane models.

19 K is way way too high.
The unit with gas heat would cost 5K or so plus tax. Google, there are examples

Yes, I know that. I've been to the Trane testing facility. I was commenting on the pricing for American Standard.
A non authorized dealer will get a better deal on American Standard than Trane. A Trane authorized dealer (smaller company) would get a good deal on new units.
The invoice price on that 4.5 ton Trane from an authorized dealer is $4,900. AC companies typically charge $2,500 for install and 10% markup for business expenses (insurance, trucks, etc..)

We had to replace ours about 5 years ago because it was leaking refrigerant like crazy. It was a 45 year old unit that when gassed up worked like a champ. Thanks to the guidelines put in place by the dumbfrick in the WH at the time, we were told we couldn't just keep filling it every May.
We had the flyer in the mailbox kind of company work up a quote and it was over 7k. The furnace & ductwork was less than 10 years old so thankfully they didn't push that. The most insane thing on the quote was a 2k charge to hammer out the existing pad and pour a new one. The pad had no cracks or other reason for replacement. In the end we had my wife's uncle do it for $400 labor and I believe a bit over 2k for the unit. Pissed off the guy who had been servicing it because he and the uncle are competitors in their small town. His quote was $100 more and came in after the job had already been done.
Moral of the story, get you high ball offer and get a couple of local people who aren't exclusively HVAC installers. They tend to know what is really needed and what isn't. We've had one problem with the install... about a year ago my youngest nailed the thermostat kicking off his shoes so it's a bit crooked. I love it cold so I drop it from 74 to 66 the minute they leave and it takes maybe a half hour to get there (2400 sq ft tri-level.)

I was quoted $17k, $19k, and $20k by 3 different companies to remove and install a new 15ton handler and install 7.5 ton condenser outside to replace an older one for a commercial installation. So I would go get several other quotes if I were you.

that's probably more than twice what a complete changeout should run(assuming ducts are staying). Go with a 16 or 17 seer. Anything more and you're really not recouping your costs with efficiency.

I had a Trane 4 ton A/C unit and Trane 64,000 BTU gas furnace using existing ducts installed for $4700 + tax last July. Location MS

I forgot the seer rating, but I know that it has the variable speed motor to reduce the utility consumption, so I think that it has a pretty high seer rating.

Second quote - this time from top Trane shop in the area came in at well under half the quote of the price for the job on the American Std. multi-stage unit. So essentially 9K for Trane 5 ton 15+SEER multi-stage heating and cooling, all duct work, and two-unit 2 yr. routine 2x yr. maintenance agreement (including my existing Trane unit for upstairs in the main house). Much more in line with what I was expecting. I'm starting to come off the ledge.
I have another guy I was gonna call that came highly recommended that is an Amana dealer, so I guess I'll see where that goes.
