...yet red oak firewood is $125 for a cord

I need some for a cabinet repair in a flip. I can't find any at any local mills which are usually cheaper than big box stores. Just amazing that such an abundant wood to the point we use it as firewood is so ridiculously high

I'm pretty shocked at how high oak boards are. Kinda understand ply because of it being a manufactured product with lots of machinery. But a board is just a piece of tree...a nice piece of tree but just a tree nonetheless.

If you need any amount, surely can find someone with a woodmizer that has some probably already milled or knows someone who has. Of course would still need edging and planing.

Not here. I checked FB marketplace this morning and multiple people selling it for $125 to $140 per cord

have no idea how people are making a profit enough to justify that, lol. A cord is a shitton of chopped wood

Is that 4'x4'x8'?

Or are they selling a half cord?

$90 for 1x12x8 is $11.25 per BF. That's high. You can get white oak and Walnut in Houston for that price. Maybe a 12" wide board will have a 10% premium charge, but still, red oak is typically like $7 per BF lately.

Admittedly been some time since I bought red oak, but know for sure the price of White Oak and Walnut in the last month. And red is significantly less.

Alternately 1x12x10 cypress can be had for 3.25 bd/ft.

Explain that...

Yea that's the price to order it from HD or Lowe's. Stines has it in stock at the price or at least they did last week

I am going to check with Deano Hardwoods in Broussard tomorrow

Yes. There is one guy out of Starks that will even deliver it for $140. There are a few more around that price I found as well.

To be fair, there are some selling only a half cord for that price as well.

I was just searching Oak looking for anyone that had any boards and saw the people advertising the firewood.

I sure wish I had some Red Oak for you.

Starting to dabble in sawmill and rough cut lumber. Will hopefully have a small operation running in a year or 2.

Just goes to show… the constraint is not the commodity itself. The process for making lumber from it must be much more constrained than for making firewood.

There is no kiln drying and sterilizing involved in making firewood.

Stout, did you by any chance know fishfighter's family? They may have some because he was always running his sawmill. Don't know how far they are from you.

In NC the price of plain sawed RO 7-8' length skip planed and straight-line ripped is just under $6 a bd ft for plain sawed RO, knock off about 75 cents per without the skip planning and SLR.

Maple is still reasonable but Walnut is outrageous as is QSWO.

Not here. I spent a small fortune for some 1/2 veneer ply, some 1x6x10s and 1x8x8s for some wainscotting in my house about a month ago. Thank goodness one of my planers can run molding because buying any hardwood around here with a profile on it is ridiculous

Does your work give you grief about flipping when you manage REOs?

Is that a conflict?

Are you ever able to buy any of the properties you manage?

I own the company so no worries about getting in trouble with the boss.

No conflict once everything goes through the sheriff sale or hits the open market.

My clients might see it as a conflict if I was out there trying to get a bunch of houses through short sales since I know which houses are in foreclosure before most people. Even then I don't think it would matter much. Banks don't want REOs and HUD, VA, FNMA, etc don't want more inventory either. Short sales are hard to accomplish anyway, especially by the time we come in. The people are usually moved out and hard to find or they have so many other liens on the property that it is best to let it go to sheriff's sale to clean the title up.

Sure. I don't really have an advantage over anyone else. The only thing I can think of is seeing the inside of the house before the sheriff's sale or before they hit auction.com so I know what it will take to repair vs everyone else that is bidding blind. Once they hit the MLS any and all advantages I may have had are gone.
