Because I'm a bored nerd today, thinking about rainfall and the lack there of this year in regards to the pre-emergent threads. I went to the two closest Weather Underground amateur weather stations from my house and entered the monthly rainfall totals for January - October in 2024 - 2026. (hard to find stations that had consistent readings before then)

I entered them into ChatGPT and had it average the two stations and give me some summary info. 38% less rain than last year, 43% below 2024.

It would be way worse if it weren't for May. I lucked out 3 weeks ago and we got some rain the two days after I put my pre-emergent down.

I'm at 0.00" in central ms for the month of October. I saw on the news we needed 12" of rain to get back to the average

The next 7 days still shows 0% chance of rain in St George.

Not a drop in 2 1/2 weeks I think.

get the free raindrop app for your phone. You’ll get the “rain station” info for your address

1.35” here in October, hasn’t rained in over 2 weeks and none forecast for the rest of the month. YTD 3” below normal and 7.5” below trailing 12 months normal

7.5” is a lot of rain to be missing

I’ve had one average rainfall year in the past four

This is good news for all of the subdivisions being built in flood zones

I wonder how this year compares to 2023 when we had that drought? 2023 seems like it was worse than what it is now.

Where do you see this on the free version? I keep getting a locked screen, but I am sure I am doing something wrong.

I have access to the local weather stations with the paid subscription to Windy, but the subscription is worth it for me.

I tried it yesterday and it won't let me go back in time very far. I use Weather Underground (Wunderground.com) and drill down to stations close by using the Wundermap. If the station has been running for years, you can go back years for free.

At the BR Metro Airport, June 1 through September 30, accumulated rainfall was

2023 - 10.24 inches

2026 - 18.27 inches

So yes, summer drought was worse in 2023 than this year.

I'm in a burb of Memphis. We have only had 3 rains here since July and they were not good rains.

The difference here this year vs '23 is we started off way behind on rain. We had a dry winter compared to what we normally have.

According to the drought monitor we are in an extreme drought.

ETA: no rain in the forecast either.

the entire lower MS valley is in extended drought. Soil moisture is in the teens and low 20%s across the region. Best you can do is selective survival watering, there’s no way to realistically saturate any area of size or depth

It would take about 1500 gallons of water to completely hydrate just one of my garden beds and I have three of them. Just gotta keep your shite alive and hope for rain

I bought a bunch of plants at the Hilltop Arboretum sale. No point in planting them until ground gets moisture. I’ve been watering my yard plantings 2x per week.

The station in Prairieville closest to my house had 14.94" June 1 - September 30th. So a bit worse than north BR down in my area this year. Some dry patches of grass and I lost an expensive japanese black pine that I failed to get watered. (other 3 did just fine with a few good waterings)
