Cold therapy. Cold Thermogenesis.
I've dabbled in it, but haven't taken the dive.
Let's discus!

From what I've read, it's supposed to increase brown fat and decrease white fat. Brown fat burns more energy and regulates blood glucose. I can't bring myself to get in freezing water yet.

It isn't about eating right for me. It is about pushing yourself further and overcoming obstacles. Adapting the body to cold has a variety of benefits.
More mind over matter type.

Well, if that's the case, I can certainly confirm that cold sucks!

So I have been wanting to grow a pair and try ice bath recovery techniques by using my pool and hot tub and alternate drawing old blood out of the muscle with the cold and forcing new blood in with the heat.
shite sounds awesome especially after a hard squat session. Problem is every single time I did my toe in the pool, my body says frick this and even though my brain is all for it, within a few seconds I find my self in the hot tub.
So junky how in the hell do I get over this? Am I just being a pussy?

Get drunk, like me right now. I'm gonna go try the hot tub but I bet those tards didn't warm it up

So is this just like an ice bath? I used to do then all the time in high school up over my chest. You just have to hope in and accept the fact that it's cold, but it's fine after 30 seconds or so. It works, soreness is gone as soon as you step out.

Ha, I was in the hot tub when I posted. I read this post and touched the pool and was like frick that.

I started out filling the tub with cold water and getting in. Moved to cold showers after a workout to cool down. Then ice baths. Then cold showers waking up. The baths are easier because the water isn’t moving. Also, during showers, rotate back and forth btw warm and cold water every 5-10 seconds starting out.
I did the ice baths when I got home from work when not working out. I slept like a rock those nights. It was intensely calming. There was a mental block for me as well. I haven’t done it in over a year so I bet I’d have to start for scratch.

Wim is much more about breathing than cold alone.

He is about both the same.

I read that book by Scott Carney "What Doesn't Kill You." I'm fascinated by it. If I remember correctly, the breathing is a big part of it - power breaths he calls them. The other suggestion I took from it was to introduce the cold slowly. I seem to recall he recommended starting with the shower. Start with the water fairly comfortable, then towards the end, make it as cold as you can tolerate and stay for 1 minute. Gradually increase the time. I haven't gotten to the point where I've tried an ice bath, but would like to.

Ben Greenfield had him on the podcast a while back. I am interested in the book. He was a Wim's pupil before Wim was widely known.
Listening to this again, thanks.

Homo Arcticus
The Ice Man takes a cold dip - Inside the Human Body: First to Last - BBC One
Wim, the Ice Man, can swim in a glacial lake so cold that it would kill a normal person.
The Immune System Hack
Autonomic systems
Thinking I'll sign up for the method. It's $199 for the ten week course and $297 for fundamentals. I can't tell what the difference is other than they say fundamentals is "better" and includes some yogi for stretching (which I don't know if the yogi isn't in the 10 week for certain). So I sent them an email...

If anyone was wondering the difference. So the additional $100 gets you yoga teacher and more polish to the lessons.
Both courses teach the three pillars that form the cornerstone of the Wim Hof Method— breathing, cold exposure, and mindset. In the original 10-Week Video Course, the techniques and exercises are explained and demonstrated in a sober, straightforward manner, leaving up to you the situations in which to put these into practice. The Fundamentals course was created to provide more guidance and practical application, and teaches you the WHM in the context of real-world scenarios. Each week has its own theme, centered around an area of everyday life that the WHM can help improve— such as stress, creativity, and sleep. This newer course is more polished, and features yoga lessons from a professional teacher, as well as one-on-one sessions.

You definitely get used to cold showers and it sticks with you. The first 3-4 cold showers really suck. Now I can take a cold shower and it really doesn't affect me all that much. I can go 1-2 months without taking one and still am ok with it.
If you do an ice bath at home, wear a bathing suit! Last time I did one, I put 60 lbs of ice....only lasted about 5 minutes. The temp only read 52 degrees, I was surprised by that.

The whole Wim Hof "method" is about breathing. The ice bath and other ice related tricks are really just proofs of the method.
Just one word of caution (which you'll receive anyway if you start researching the method): stay the frick out of immersion in water while doing the technique. Blackouts are extremely common and several people have died from shallow water drownings while using the technique in water.
