His is more akin to meditation with benefits. Tje breathing technique is a type of hyperventilation that changes body temperature, oxygen levels, and a bunch of other stuff. It supposedly energized and has all kinds of health benefits. It’s also what let’s him climb Everest in shorts and t-shirt, run a marathon in Antarctica and hold his breath for obscenely long times.

So yeah, like meditation it’s supposed to have all kinds of mood elevating and psychological benefits, but it also allows certain physiological feats.

I think the cold therapy is more for the mind body split, as it's a quick trauma (for most, obviously athletes have used ice baths for a long time). Helps with controlling your autonomic nervous system. If you join an occult group there is often a traumatic event to take you to the next level. A notable example recently being that group of women in the northeast US that had that tattoo thing carved on their inner hip. Obviously you could do this with regular meditation but this is a quicker solution. Those Tibetan monks have to go out onto the mountain and dry a wet towel on their bare back without moving, and it's damn near freezing out, then sleeping on the mountain alone with a thin sheet to no ill effects.

Control your Breath, Control your Body (Wim Hof Explained) 11 minute video, includes medical study where wim hoffers actually respond significantly better than the non wim hoffers. Even how the wim hof method is great for autoimmune diseases.

This has obvious health bonuses. On top of that it is a good starting point for people wanting to get into a metaphysic pursuit or other type of meditation/yoga (one of the two wim hof programs comes with yoga).

Cool you guys are talking about this. I’ve done the breathing and cold showers. Got the hot tub with the heater off but am too scared. Lol

Cold tubs are nothing new though. Absolutely destroys soreness. Probably 50% taken away. I did the hot tub (cold) once after a p90x leg day. I was greatly improved compared to other leg days.

Did you do the program?

First day, just did the breathing thing. That breathing thing is nuts man. Felt like energy waves flowing with quickness through me during retention. I don't know if that is just how it feels or was first timer things Pretty interesting sensation either way.

Are you on his program? I've never done it. His story only got me interested in cold adaptation.

Yes. I'm doing the fundamentals program. There's ten weeks in both programs. It opens a new part every week, so you can't skip to the end...

In his breathing plan he is talking about the nervous system. I do believe that is related to the waves I was feeling. He also talks about driving oxygen into the brain. I don't know if you ever seen anything about the hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments, but supposedly that drives oxygen into the brain.

He also talks about overcoming the cold and it giving you power. First time he wants you to do at least 30 second cold shower. So this morning I tried that out after doing the breathing exercise. I took my regular warm shower then switched it to as cold as it could be. I immediately started doing the breathing exercise in slight panic and went for a minute. On the plus side it felt warmer getting out of the shower instead of colder...

He is super positive and is always talking about being positive and all that.

So I'm in week four now. His cold adaptation is most definitely connected to what the breathing does for the body. Now when I get in the cold shower and the cold hits it feels as if the skin is numb or something. You just don't feel the cold while the first week it feels a bit miserable, second week it feels a bit dreadful that you are going to take a cold shower. But end of second week / beginning of third week it starts to feel pretty amazing and you feel fully energized leaving the shower. Undeniably the worst part is if you shave after showering you can't use hot water, because it would be counterproductive to cold adaptation

This fourth week is on inflammation and the homework is doing horse stance for an hour outside in the cold in your shorts and t-shirt. Using the breathing, and what else you've learned to control your chemistry to not become acidic, like your thighs would normally. The adrenaline usage is very interesting stuff. I was able to do that at like 42 degrees today, but looking not so forward to tomorrow when it is like 31 out.

If you are interested in doing it you southerners may not have much time left to really do it without having to wait for next winter as some of the stuff has you outside in the cold in just your shorts

Thanks for posting these updates. I’ve been following Wim for a few years and have been debating trying out this program. I’ll be interested to hear your overall thoughts once you complete it.

Hate to be the cheap arse here, but how much is the Wim Hof program? I know there is a ton of stuff on YouTube that’s free, but you are going to his dedicated website which I assume is a pay site.

Just talking about web stuff, not going to Norway or wherever for a retreat.

Still need to do the ice/cold bath in my hot tub. Cold showers I’ve got down.

There's two programs, both ten weeks. One is 199 and the other is 297. I asked the difference and they said the 297 is the newer up-to-date one modified from the experience of teaching it for years. I'm doing the 297 one.

So just starting week five, so I don't know if it is worthwhile for certain. There is reasoning behind the steps to the ten week program. The breathing is super important for the cold therapy, the breathing is probably the most important thing. Apparently you are supposed to be able to control the chemistry of your body via this plan. Including neutralizing acidity, like lactic acid. You should get better athletic performance via this method. If you are inflexible it may be beneficial to do a couple weeks of yoga or some such before starting, but you can just go with the yoga in the plan too.

I'm sure you can figure out the gist for free, but I don't know if you'll get the proper steps. Some tards have went too far with cold portion because they could stand the cold and then got frost bite because their body wasn't acclimated yet even though they had the willpower for it.

Ehh, for that price I may just settle for the gist. The cold definitely helps put me in an incredibly calm state which I become a complete rock while sleeping. I sadly doubt I'll be able to investigate Wim's cold to its full potential due to life, but it opened my eyes on tricks to help myself get through.

He has three free videos on the website. I will say if those put you in an incredibly calm state that the breathing exercises feel fantastic at the end. I do enjoy the weekend for it quite a lot more because there is no hurry to get to work. It is blissful.

With that said I will take a look at those free videos and if he doesn't explain the breathing very well I will try to fill in the gaps as best I can if you'd like.

You can piece together the method if you listen to Wim on Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss Podcasts. I paid the money 2 years ago to take the online course. I hate the cold. Where do we find cold showers in Louisiana? Nowhere. Francos in Mandeville has a cold pool that is reported to be 48 degrees. I worked my way up to 8 minutes in there using the breathing techniques. It feels very good. I highly recommend this practice. FaceBook has a good Wim Hof group and there are tons of videos and answers listed.

Now I just need to find an icebath/cold pool in Baton Rouge. Anyone know of one?
