Compared to the benefits I looked at the side effects and they seem rare and fairly mild at that.

I would guess people see them as a way to not have to make any lifestyle changes. An easy way out.

Some believe bad LDL readings are like reading an elevated car engine temp gauge.

So if you were to just manually move the needle to an acceptable range the underlying issues go untreated…and there’s a laundry list of side affects attached to statins people rarely know about.

IMO people are quickly prescribed them after getting antiquated and/or incomplete tests.

If you don’t get an LDL-P test I don’t care what your total cholesterol is.

Also, I view all bloodwork as a snapshot in time; takes a pattern to create a story worthy of meds.

It’s a way for Pfizer et al to get rich without actually helping people. Lipitor is the world’s best seller.

Yet 75% of heart attack victims have “normal” ldl.

UCLAHealth

Scam

My point, is it really LDL causing the problem? Perhaps we should be more concerned with triglycerides and low HDL.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm asking why?

I may get off mine if someone can give me a good reason to.

Started taking 20 mg lipitor a month ago after my doc insisted. I also cleaned up my diet (which wasn't terrible to begin with) and maintained my lifting/cardio program. Overall, I'd say I'm living much healthier. In spite of all this I've put on 12 pounds. Its kind of a head scratcher for me. Thinking about tapering off the lipitor and see what happens.

I exercise five hours a week, don't smoke, and eat healthy. Sometimes it's genetic. I have somewhat high blood pressure too.

Absolutely. I don't have any hate for statins I was just saying why there may be hate for them. I would bet the average person on statins does not exerercise 5 times a week though.

I had some prescribed to me 2 years ago. After a month I started feeling tightness in my chest any time I would be doing something physical, even mowing the yard. I stopped taking them pretty quick.

A significant portion of individuals will have the muscle pain side effects. I see plenty of folks shitting on mainstream medicine for being quick to use them, but some of the most innovative health span doctors and longevity experts out there (a good example is Peter Attia) are champions of this class of drug, as either part of a longevity cocktail often times in combination with metformin (euphemistically and half-jokingly referred to as exercise in a pill), or their FDA on-label usage. I definitely feel that some of the criticism is unfair, and that as a class, these drugs have many beneficial uses, but as with any drug should be used thoughtfully and carefully.

This is extremely misleading. The majority of heart attack victims are 65+, already on a statin that has driven their LDL down and are suffering from the lifetime of accumulated damage done BEFORE they were on a statin. The fact that their LDL is normal at the time of their heart attack is not indicative of what you think it is.

The reality is that every other species of primate in the wild has an LDL average around 20-60 and they dont get heart disease. the rare ones that due have genetic mutations that lead to exceptionally high LDL. Statins in age and health matched cohorts DRAMATICALLY reduce the risk of cardiovascular death.

Does particle size matter? Yes. Is all LDL created the same? No. But the "LDL doesnt matter" lie pushed by the keto crowd is just that, a lie. Below a certain LDL threshold across a lifetime athersclerotic cardiovascular disease simply does not occur. It is a necessary component of plaque formation.

It is not the only problem, but it is a necessary component of heart disease.

If your LDL is <70 for your entire adult life, you will not develop clinical atherosclerosis. Now if you have an LDL of say, 100 or 120 or 140 will you definitely get heart disease? No, not all LDL is equal and risk factors are cumulative. But we know LDL below a certain threshold over a lifetime prevents heart disease.
