Washing and getting the smell out of workout clothes
Posted by al_cajun on 8/27/18 at 9:29 am00
Anyone got any secrets? I typically wear the same 4 sets of workout stuff to workout in. Even after washing them sometimes they still got a hint of workout stink in them.
Soaking in vinegar will help.
I sweat a lot. I pretty much shower in my clothes after a run or riding the bike hard. If I don't rinse the sweat out immediately, it's not even just a hint of stink. Sometimes it will get out right nasty even after several washes. When that happens I'll soak them in vinegar then wash again. I'll try that twice. If that doesn't help, I get rid of them. It usually helps, but some of my clothes were too far gone.

Soaking in vinegar usually helps a for a wear or two. Also, freezing or drying the clothes out in the sun can do some good.
It amazes me that a shirt can smell great but as soon as the first beads of sweat hit it smells of death.

Srub and soak with baking soda. Add baking soda to detergent during wash. Lysol laundry sanitizer also helps.

I think the only thing that may work is to not let it stay wet with sweat for any amount of time after each workout.
Hang your clothes immediately after.

Seems as if the Dry Wicking shirts stink a lot easier that cotton.

After going off shore i just leave my cloths in the back of the truck for a few days and after a wash the smell of dead fish and pogie is gone. baking in the bed of the truck works. but you do lose color quickly.

They do.
I've found that Tide Sport works too.

I'm on board with never understanding how this happens. I've always done the wash in vinegar every few workouts, and it seems to work pretty well. I may have to try the soak in baking soda idea.

Do you have a high efficiency washer? That might be the problem.

when you take it off, lay it out and let it dry. dont let it dry all balled up, or on top of other wet stuff

About four years ago I started taking my shirt off as soon as I get home from the gym and soaking it in cold water and about 2 tablespoons of baking soda. I let it soak for a day or two, then I wash and I always hang them to air dry.
I only have to replace the shirts once every 18 months or so at most. It really works well.

I've had shirts for 5+ years and never had to do that once.
