Do you think doing leg press on the same day as deadlift is a good supplement to doing squats on another day?
Posted on 4/23/18 at 7:35 pm to LSUSUPERSTAR
No. Not the same thing as squats. Good for conventional deadlift though.

It's better than nothing as an accessory. Won't take the place of squats, though.
As a deadlift accessory, I really only get carryover from squats, RDL's and GHR's. If you have access to a SSB or belt squat, those are better than leg press, IMO.

This would be just to supplement regular squats. I don't like leg extension machines as I feel it puts too much torque on my knees and hips.

In that case it's fine.

Leg extensions suck. They're the worst of your options. I'd actively avoid them.

I may have to find a leg extension machine to work on this patella tendinitis. Iso holds for 4 at 30 secs (1 min rest) using a moderate weight at about 45 degrees is the new therapy for that shite.
Also need to hit some lower quad movements (leg extensions also hit the mark) as well as iso hamstring movements.

My dislike of leg extensions come from this sort of research:
LINK
The ACL prevents your lower leg from sliding forward relative to your thigh. The Leg Extension directs its forces on the ACL. According to a study published in the Journal of Biomechanics, peak ACL tension was experienced during the Leg Extension when compared to the Squat and Leg Press.
The weight used may be light compared to an exercise like a Squat, but that doesn't necessarily matter. A study in The American Journal of Sports Medicine found that increasing the resistance during the Squat did not increase strain on the ACL, whereas increasing the resistance during the Leg Extension did add strain to the ligament. The force is applied far from your knee, so if you're using 100 pounds, your knee will experience a much greater weight. Also, your body is designed to handle the compressive force of a Squat, so lifting hundreds of pounds is not a problem.
A study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery confirmed this. The researchers found that movements like the Squat and Deadlift cause greater compression force and muscular activation, while movements like the Leg Extension produce greater shear force and minimum muscular activation.
I've never personally been a fan either. I can see usefulness in rehabbing, when you're going light and building a base, but it has risk factors sufficient enough that I prefer more natural movements.
But if it works for you...nothing is better than something that works.

I don’t really have a need for leg press. I feel that squats and deadlifts with a couple of isolation lifts sprinkled throughout the week do the job. But, if it works for you, it works.

I do leg press on leg day because my gym only has the Smith machine squat rack and I don't find that gives a very good work out
I do squats with no weights to get the range of motion and then do leg presses as my main compound motion exercise and do some supplemental stuff
Weighted squats would be more ideal but I don't like messing with the Smith machine

Time to find a new gym, bossman.

Yeah unfortunately I'm working out of town. I do need to see if something better is available but I started at planet fitness to at least develop the habit. It's essentially a cardio and dumbbell gym.

Hey man, good on you for doing anything. Almost every town has a Y. And almost every Y has a rack or two. The reason I stayed with the Y is I used to travel a lot for work and could go to any Y. I don’t thinks it’s that easy anymore, but it’s still very reasonable.
Keep at it.
Keep at it.

I always preferred the hack squat machines over leg presses. They don’t seem as common these days though.

Its how you use the leg press in the first place. Most people just load up tons of 45's, do a shitty rage of motion and call it a day. Put your feet high on the platform to hit hamstrings and glutes. As for as quads go, lessen the weight, bring your feet down, toes pointed out and plie. Play with feet positioning and see what is best for placing tension on the desired muscle.

Really?
They do have a Y here so I might make a visit. That would be good news because the only other gym I could find that definitely has free barbell weights is 125 for month to month
ETA: looks like they do have a pretty solid Y here that isn't far from where I live. Never thought to give the place a look. I could add swimming and some pick up basketball games to keep my cardio not as boring as well. Would have never thought about it had you not mentioned it.

In addition, a lot of people round their lower back in the bottom position to compensate for too much weight in the disadvantaged position. Lower back injuries happen a lot in leg press.

The few times I use it these days I’m doing light weight and high reps, I’ve made the mistake of trying to hulk out on it and paid the price.

I think that is all Dorian Yates used for squats and his quads didn't look to shabby. However, like you, I am not a huge fan of Smith Machine squatting but I still do it from time to time when I don't feel like going heavy in the rack. Also, you can grab a dumbell (go as heavy as you can safely hold to chest level with both hands) and do squats with that. Kinda like air squats with weight. That gives my quads some god pumps plus you get a little cardio benefit as well.
