Just wanted to get some advice, I'm having a vasectomy in May. Decided it's time to become sterile.

Has anyone else on here had the procedure? Any advice on how long I should go before exercising and resuming most normal activities? How long does the soreness (so realistically, not what the doctor tells you) usually last?

Get a bag of frozen peas to sooth the boys. You’ll be sure like you took a nut shot. Don’t lift or move a whole lot for at least a few days. Listen to your doctor. If he says do or don’t do something, comply. I saw a good friend of mine get back into the action a little too soon, and he regretted it like a mfer.

I took longer than those other guys, about 3 weeks before getting back in the gym. However I had it in Monday afternoon and didn’t take the next day off work and I think that delayed everything some since I have it no time to rest. Just be cautious with squats or things that make you bear down with your abdominal muscles, can cause a hematoma

Procedure: in and out in 15 minutes

You could go to work following day if needed and exercise within 2-3 days after.

I had mine done on a Thursday afternoon during football season. It was great sitting around all weekend watching football. I felt well enough to run on Monday, but I decided to actually follow the doctor’s instructions and wait until the following Monday. All was well then. Taking a week to 10 days off is probably a good idea. It’s a good chance to make it a rest week and come back stronger.

I had mine done on a Friday. Stayed in bed all day Saturday. Walked around like normal on Sunday. Ran a half marathon on Monday. It really was a non-issue. No problems at all

I did mine with Dr Mark Sutton in Houston. Went for an initial consult then the snipping was a month or so later. He offers a Valium beforehand to calm any nerves but I didn’t take it bc I drive myself. Local anasthetic. Lay there on the table while he and his assistant (fat lady unimpressed with my junk) do their thing. Took maybe 10 mins, I don’t recall. No pain beyond the initial needle for the local anesthetic. A couple small incisions in the nutsack. He gave me I think 15 Vicodin which I ended up not even needing. Recommended I lounge around the rest of the day and ice it and not do any exercise for a few days. For me, it never did hurt. I didn’t ice it and was back to work the next day.

I had a no needle no scalpel one done. Better technology. He used some device that injects the anesthesia while making a hole in your sack. Felt like somebody thumped you on your nuts. No real pain or soreness at all. I was walking around normally the next day but did ice a little. I wouldn't have tried to run though. I was stressed but it was a non event.

I was instructed not to ejaculate for a week, but after that week he recommended to shoot off 30 times in 30 days before my follow up appointment in which I brought my sample in to check for swimmers. With my wife in the room he told us that saliva does not compromise the sample

To the OP, I was sore for 3-4 days with some tenderness lasting the better part of a month. But it wasn’t anything debilitating. I was back to work the following Monday and back in the gym at full speed after a week.

Good responses guys, glad to have a good idea of what to expect. I trusted my doctor for the most part but you know how it goes, it's good to hear from people who have actually gone through it.

I want to change the perspective a little bit. I imagine most of you all have done this as a form of family planning. Essentially that you all have done this after having children and after deciding with your wife that you all are done having children.

I am single and have no children. I am doing this because I do not have a desire to actually have children. I want to be more sexually active without the risk of an "accident." Obviously it's not something you share with people unless you want to, but do you look at it as weird that a guy would have it before being married and/or having children?

Also for those of you who are unmarried (either single, divorced, widowed) and have had a vasectomy, did you get a sense of freedom after the procedure? Did it give you a sense of power knowing that you absolutely know you can not get a woman pregnant? Did you start to have sex more often with random women after getting a vasectomy?
