US doctors' group adopts new policy on healthy weight assessment

Gym goers rejoice!

I like how they make it a Racial/Ethnic decision and not the most obvious one: People who lift and stay in shape vs. people who do not and are fat AF.

June 14 (Reuters) - The American Medical Association (AMA) on Wednesday said it will advise doctors to pay less attention to body mass index (BMI) in determining if a patient is at a healthy weight, saying the measure does not predict disease risk equally well across racial and ethnic groups.
BMI, a ratio of weight to height, has long been used to define underweight, "normal" weight, overweight, obesity and morbid obesity, despite mounting evidence that it is an inaccurate predictor of health risks on an individual level.
At the influential physician group's annual meeting in Chicago, members voted adopt a new policy that says BMI should be just one factor in determining whether a patient is at a healthy weight. Other measures such as body composition, belly fat, waist circumference, and genetic factors are also important, the AMA said.

You know somewhere there's a 300 lb black woman telling a 300 lb Polynesian woman, "Girl, I told you."

I reposted this in the OT because those frickers love a good BMI discussion. My current BMI ranges from 28-30 with an actual BF% of 16 or so. If I ever decided to get serious on diet.. nah... frick that.. I like to eat.
We can have the civil discussion of the flaws of BMI here.

BMI not good for advanced lifters
BMI good for general population
that's really all there is to it

One thing in defence of BMI I will say is people WAY overblow how much off it will be if you lift. People act like because they work out they can be carrying around 30-40lbs extra weight and it's all beef, which unless they're juicing just isn't the case.

its really only flawed for about 5% of the population at most. i personally would rather see them use body fat percentage but good luck getting females to allow that into their file
and got to love the OT....."BMI is dumb AF, its flawed and doesnt work for people like me" same guy 5 post later..."look i wear a size 38 in the waist...im not fat"

Waist circumference and belly fat are the big things they need to be looking at anyway. Lots of correlations between belly fat and health issues.

Waist to height ratio is easy enough to measure and gives a pretty good idea of whether you're at a healthy weight or not. People lie about their height as much or more as their weight though... so maybe not.

Visceral fat and belly fat are very different

i did get a chuckle out of it. "but its not the right weight for him"
I do not particularly love the BMI myself and think other ways like just straight BF% measures should be the standard. That being said if you are deep in the high BMI numbers, you gotta accept facts.

My BMI is 22 and BF% in 11-12. FAT according to our us doctors

..and the waist measurement should be performed at the belly button, not where you wear your shorts/pants. Those two numbers could be vastly different.
An example:
Dudes be claiming they wear a 32" waisted pants but have 8" of gut hanging over the front.
If they really want a simple calculation method without putting someone through a BF% caliper measurement, the US Navy method fits in perfectly.
Height
Weight
Neck circumference
Waist circumference at the belly button

I always get really weird readings from the Navy method.

Mine has me at 16% which is much closer than what a 29-30 BMI suggests.

You probably have the same issue as me. It doesn’t account for my 6lbs of dick.

Same issue with my dump truck arse.

never used the navy one. puts me at 14-16, which sounds about right.

27.4 BMI
Navy method has me at 20% body fat vs 17.5 on a recent InBody test.

My last InBody was 17%.
I once did a caliper BF test (same weight as now) and the girl doing the test had me at 9%.
