Was on my last set (5+) of squats Monday. Rep 6 my right shoulder crept forward, and I knew I kinda pulled something getting back set. Pushed out 2 more reps, and wrapped up. Felt funny leaving gym, and sharp pain set in good that night.

Now 2 days later, still sharp pain in low right side of back. Doesn't seem to be responding to anything in the medicine cabinet, heating pad, or even TENS unit.

I'm sure other have done this, so is there some type of active recovery or something that'll help this along? I sneezed earlier today and it bout buckled my knees.

Is it radiating?

My baseline is always ice and anti-inflammatories in that region. Especially if it is not directly aligned with a muscle and radiating, the likelihood it's an injury inflaming a nerve is super high.

If it's 100% on a muscle, you could have torn the muscle. Worst case...you could have a disc issue. 100% doctor for disc issues.

I'd push the ice/NSAID hard for 3 days. If no improvement, doctor. Of course, going to a doc right now is never that bad an idea.

Isn't radiating, just feels like someone stabbing me with a hot knife when I move certain ways. Getting comfortable in the bed is literally a pain in the upper arse.

Usually if I pull a muscle, jumping on it fast with anti-inflammatory meds and the TENS unit will squash it. Nothing I've taken has seemed to touch this yet, though. I'm gonna switch from heat to ice and see what happens.

Have you tried KETO?

Yo laugh but he’ll be healed in half the time and this injury likely would have been prevented.

Ice is the worst thing you can do recovery wise. The latest literature suggests a delay of ~25% in healing time with the utilization of ice.

Me staying focused on my form would've prevented it. Definitely know it's my fault

Not for a nerve impingement/pressure. I read the study posted the other day, but inflammation for soft tissue vs pressure on a nerve is verh different.

Inflammation response does help with soft tissue, but nerve pressure has always been major for me in the low back, and I think for a lot of people. Relieving that, reduction in inflammation is huge.

Just my 2 cents, but I feel strongly here, much more so than soft tissue injuries.

Hoping it's not disc.

Question: can you "get" to it by rubbing it? Like, can you massage the pain and have it feel like a massage? Or does it seem like it's so far in that you can't really "reach" it?

Don't let thought and reason get in the way of OWS regurgitating the fringe though du jour in every thread.

Yeah, I can get to it. It's offset of my spine, so feels more like an erector or lumborum muscle.

I've done this several times over the years. It's annoying AF but usually, for me at least, once you warm the muscle up the pain subsides. Typically a couple sets of low weight deadlifts was all it took. That being said, in my experience it takes a long time for the pain to go away completely so if it's unbearable you might want to look into getting dry needled by a physical therapist. That usually knocks it out in a couple of days rather than weeks.

That's good.

But being offset of your spine doesn't make it more or less likely to be disc-related. Just making triple sure you can massage it and actually get the "hurts so good" type of massage pain.

Not that this helps your problem, but I feel it needs to be stressed that pushing more reps out on squats and deadlift after something is off is almost always a terrible decision.

Yep....I totally screwed it up, not just letting the form lapse but doing the additional 2 reps. Kinda why I included those details, and also why I'm pissed at myself for being in pain, because I should've known better.

Rest man. That’s the only thing

Give it 5-7 days at least. If it hasn’t improved go see a Dr

Have you tried taking 2 Aleve and 1 ES Tylenol together? You can do that 3 times a day for 2-3 days if not medically contraindicated and then go to twice a day for 2 days and then to the traditional way of taking Aleve and Tylenol.

Haven't tried that yet, but will first thing in the morning. I just need some relief. Did some very light weight deadlifts this evening (under 100#), and went very slow with perfect form. Actually felt really good to warm up those muscles. Only thing so far that has helped.

Kelly Starrett - back tweak fix

If it is muscular you can try this to help calm muscle spasms down. I've tweaked my back similar to your description several times a few years ago. If you can walk pain free then make sure to get your steps in. Stay moving as much as possible as long as it doesn't make the pain worse.

Took a muscle relaxer last night, and it helped with my back a lot.....but it transferred the pain into my testicles. So the same movements that would aggravate my back (coughing, sneezing, standing up from a chair...) are now sharply felt in my nuts. Made for a long arse night.. not taking that shite again. Gonna try to keep moving, and will head to the Doc tomorrow. Seems to be better today, now that my nuts aren't killing me anymore.
