I like 600s but they’re more of a daily long runner. Not a tempo. It’s just a giant chunk of foam. No hate on it but it’s a vastly different shoe.

Razor on left. 600 on right.

On the narrowness of the razor, this is next to a NB 1080, which I would compare to a Altra when it comes to width and toe box.

I may end up keeping them for long runs and order a pair of the Razor 2 also. Or the Escalante Racer; have a couple of price alerts in place for those.

I've been intrigued by all the vaporfly talk in this thread and elsewhere. So, I tried on the Vaporfly 4% flyknit at the local running store yesterday. Took them out for a little spin as well (with the store's blessing, of course). I have to say, the shoe felt strange to me when just trying it on. The midsole seemed to fit extremely narrow, even for a racing shoe. I have a narrow foot, and my foot was hanging off the shoe.

I didn't get to take them too far, since they are precious commodity. During the time I wore them, they felt to me slightly snappier than other shoes, but not significantly so to the point I was blown away.

My questions to those who have them are: do the shoes wear that narrow for everyone? Does the ride feel more natural once you really get going? And do you find them to be significantly faster/more efficient than other lightweight race shoes in the distance racing category?

Thanks

Disclaimer: I'm not interested in buying this shoe anytime soon. Just wanted to start up a little "shoe talk" out of curiosity.

As I’ve said before, Nike has always been narrow for me. I was hesitant to buy the ZF FK because of this and they felt narrow at first but either the FK stretched a bit after a few miles or I adapted. All good now. I’d imagine they are a similar width to the Zoom Fly FK? Don’t you own a pair of those?

Yeah, I do. The ZF FK are narrow, which I would expect in a racing shoe. But I would say the vaporfly were a good bit more narrow than the zoom fly in the midfoot area. Toe box seemed to be about the same.

So, I just googled to see if I was crazy or if there was something to the way the shoe felt for me. Found this review which sets out some info on it:

LINK

quote:

VAPORFLY 4% FLYKNIT VERSUS ZOOM FLY Width of Mid-Foot - One of the biggest differences between the Zoom Fly (left) and Vaporfly Flyknit (right) is the width of the mid-foot. At the narrowest point, the Zoom Fly’s mid-foot is 69mm while the Vaporfly Flyknit’s mid-foot is 56mm. That is a difference of 13mm (1.3cm) or in other words the Vaporfly is 19% narrower in the mid-foot, which is a big difference! The mid-foot of the Vaporfly Flyknits is the narrowest midfoot of any shoe I have ever worn (and I have probably run at least 30,000 km). One of the first things I noticed when I tried them on was that the inside of my feet (in the mid-foot area) seemed to hang in space off the inside of the shoe; there is no foam beneath the inside of the mid-foot. I personally do not like this. I believe that in an effort to save weight, Nike has trimmed away the foam that would normally be in the inside mid-foot area. In addition to foam weight savings, Nike is also able to save weight (and cost) on the carbon fibre plate that is in the soles of these shoes.

Oh damn, that’s pretty noticable. Definite deterrent for me.

Yeah, the reason I disclaimed that I'm not buying any time soon is that I'm not in a place with my running where I'd receive the real benefit from a shoe at that price point.

I did want to try them out though with the way a lot of people talk about them. When I tried them on, they weren't quite what I expected. The width may not be an issue for a lot of people.

Other companies are starting to use Pebax (Float ride, 4%) pretty soon I imagine it’ll be like TPU (EGO, Boost) and you’ll be able to get that type of foam return in almost every brand. Fingers crossed.

The return and toe off in that vaporfly is special. It would be a game changer if similar technology is packaged for the masses in different types of shoe designs.

I bought a pair of the Pegasus Turbos off of eBay and put about 70 miles on them. You can tell in that shoe how cushioned and springy that the Zoom X foam is. But without the carbon fiber plate to mellow it out, the Peg Turbo can feel too bouncy without a real benefit. Of course, it's stacked with react foam instead of the plate, so there's just a lot of foam in that shoe - too much for me, I think. Anyway, I'm sure there are ways to get it right.

Hoka just released their 4% competitors with a carbon plate. At $180, I'd rather spend the extra money for the real deal, but they look quite nice. I raced in the Tracers previously and they were solid shoes, but nothing special.

I have both pairs of the Nike, but the Zoom Fly in 11.5 and Vaporfly in 12s

They do fit snug, but haven’t had any issues with hanging off the edge per se. The feet do bulge in the upper a bit, but I feel they are mostly comfortable. Most importantly, they are fast!

Grabbed a pair of the Razor 2 from Amazon for $85. About the cheapest I’ve found in my size. Now gonna decide if I’ll bring the 600s back or just keep them for pavement pounding.

Think I’ll bring the 600’s back. Closet space and less guilt if nothing else, ha. The more I read up on the Razor 2 the more I like them. Pumped to get them in and get outside!

Just read through this whole thread, cause I was bored.

Spot on about those Altra Escalantes. They'd be just fine if I ran straight ahead all the time. But I feel like I'm going to twist my ankle every time I go around a corner. And for some reason I start to get a blister on the top of my middle toe when I wear them for anything longer than about 6 miles.

I've been a New Balance guy for a while. The Zante 2 Breathes are still my favorite shoe ever, and I'm pissed at NB for discontinuing them. But the Beacons are becoming a shoe I like a lot.

Tried out a pair of the Reebok Floatride Run ULTK. Interesting shoe the sock upper. Coming from low drop shoes, they feel really weird to me, especially walking. Running in them hasn't been a problem, and I can really feel the energy return.

Just got a pair of Adidas adizero adios 3 for $62. Was hoping to get a run in them tonight, but that may not happen. When it does, I'll update this.

Normally 10, but based on what I tried on today, looks like 9.5 in Skechers.

Amazon, so I can cancel with one click if you find something.

Supposedly they shored this up with the Racer and maybe even the 1.5. I read it somewhere but can’t remember for which shoe.
