Sorry if this has been discussed, but are custom made shoes worth it? If so, any quality mail order custom sites? Thank you

Custom orthotics? I have no experience but I’m sure someone here does. Probably better to go that route instead of the stability shoe route.

I’m looking to run 2-3 trail races in LA/MS this winter. I read that the Pegasus doesn’t have much of a toe bumper or a rock plate. Are those generally preferable around here, or are those features for rockier terrains? Also, do y’all see this price drop as permanent? Sorry for the newbie questions. I’ve never bought trail shoes, and I’ve only run one trail race. This is outside of my comfort zone. ??

Not familiar with trail shoes, but I do believe the Peg trail is a more mild trail shoe. I’ve seen the new Wildhorse 6 on sale already, looks good, gets good reviews, has a rock plate. Probably worth looking into brands outside of Nike for trail shoes. Nike makes good ones, but brands like Salomon, Hoka, Inov-8 probably do them better.

Peg Trail is probably suffice for running in LA though, and price drop should be permanent. The Peg 37 just released, so a Peg 37 Trail is probably coming very soon.

Decided to exchange my Rincon's for a pair of Pegasus 37, will report back when I can test them (probably not until Sunday).

I also ordered another pair of Zoom Fly 3 to replace a deteriorating pair of ZFFK.

Nice. Will definitely need a report back on the new Peg. I’ve been hearing good things. Optimistic it might be the Epic React replacement I’ve been looking for.

Thanks for the tips!

I really want to go somewhere and try on a few pair. The Brooks Divide caught my eye because of the price point ($100) and the reviews, but I feel like I need to try them and some competitors out. I don’t think anywhere local has them though.

I've heard good things as well. I was happy they had my size local and I didn't have to order them.

I have a pair of the Rincon's. Was there something specific you did not like about them? Mine have just over 300 miles.

Also have two pair of Altra Torins that I rotate.

If you are a Nike guy, the Terra Kigers are great for trails. They have a wider toe box than their road shoes and really are comfortable.

Thanks for the heads up! Those could well be exactly what I was looking for. They’ll definitely be on my shortlist when I can convince my wife I need another pair of shoes for the rotation.

Rubbed my big toe and just didn’t feel comfortable in them after 3-4 miles. I put about 25 miles in them and I honestly haven’t wanted to put them back on.

Pegasus 37 Review from an Average Runner:

I never tried the 36 so to me this is a totally new experience. Much softer than the Rincon but a little heavier. I did not weigh them, this is based on feel. They land somewhere between the Zoom Fly and Turbo 2 as far as softness goes and that’s exactly what I wanted.

The big negative is the fit around the toe box. I wear an 11 and my toes felt like I was trying to squeeze into a 10. My socks are Feetures High Performance Cushion. I’ll try them again with my Elite Light Cushion and see if it’s any better.

The laces feel short to say the least. After tightening up and lacing, I really didn’t have much excess to knot.

Overall I like them. I only did 4.5 mi but I felt like I could go more. I’m going to try them again on my 7 mi run this week.

Shoe gurus -

I am looking at the Brooks Hyperion Tempo and the NB 1080v10.

Any expert opinions on these?

Will be used for general weekday road running, 3-10 miles.

Open to other suggestions as well. The trails are getting too humid, I will soon be forced to pound pavement.

Sounds promising. I don’t think I’ve seen an completely bad review on the 37 yet. Think it’s still top of my list for my next daily.

I’ve not run in the 1080v10, but I know these are two pretty different shoes.

I have the Tempo, currently at 16.5 miles on them. It’s a really good shoe, but definitely at its best at paces of 8:15/8:00 and below. The foam is cushioned just enough to be comfy and responsive...but very firm in the heel. So if you heal strike or even land square on the mid foot they may feel dead to you. The upper is one of the best I’ve tried and they look phenomenal. I’m reserving mine for speed work days, they just don’t feel great for me at slower paces.

From what I’ve heard the 1080 is supposed to be great. Good mileage shoe and can handle an occasional quicker pace. So really just depends what you’re looking for.

Run #2 in the Peg 37:

Felt much more comfortable today. I re-laced everything up, put on some Feetures Elite Light Cushion and had a lot more room in the toe box. This shoe is built for tempo days but has the cushion to keep going. I found myself speeding up but comfort never suffered.

It's a great option for a change of pace day or when you want something that's not as soft as a Zoom Fly.

I’m 95% sure I’ll end up with a pair, just need to wear my Reebok’s out.

Picked up some New Balance Summit Unknown’s today for $45. Plan to use them to run the St Charles street car line when it’s muddy and for occasional visits to Colorado. They seemed to get favorable reviews.

I have been running Altra "The One" since they started making them about 4 years ago. I need to change up now, because they have stopped making them and some of the other models have changed a lot based on reviews I have come across. Anyone know which Nike model would be similar?

With a straight and narrow foot, is there a particular Brooks model(s) I should be looking at it does it matter?

I won’t really be doing running in them, except sprints. It’ll mainly be a gym shoe/walking shoe.

Brooks, like New Balance, are better for wide feet.

Patrick, see if you can't test out some Altra Escalantes. Not sure if the stack height works for you but the underfoot feel is very good.

The 2.0's upper is very good not like the original version.

You sure? I’ve had a PT professor recommend Brooks after doing an assessment of my fear?

What other suggestions are there for narrow feet?
