Ditto but I am 50. Well said. It's been quite a journey following this path we call jits. Met and rolled with some great people along the way, with my core training group being almost as close as my own family. Someone asked me once to describe it and it is almost like playing a game of chess but on a mat.

Everything that people get enthusiastic about is cringe

You are welcome to that opinion, although I was hoping for a more in depth answer. If you aren't interested, then don't try it.

Gi is where most everyone says to start, but it’s pretty ridiculous in the sense that it’s primarily applicable if another person is wearing the same set of pajamas. Nogi is more realistic to something you may encounter from a self defense perspective.

No man I definitely am interested
It’s still kinda low key but I worry it’ll become like CrossFit where everybody does it if I start liking it

Actually, I think it is smart to start in Gi. Gi is a slower game with a lot of friction, so it gives you time to think about your next move. It also makes you really good at escapes and very conscious of your neck exposure. On the other hand, nogi makes you really good at establishing pins and controlling opponents since you don't have lapel and sleeve grips to assist in pinning. Both are beneficial, and though I prefer nogi and I'm competing in nogi Pans next month, I think starting in Gi is wise.

Have you considered that nobody wants you in their gym because you are such a douche?

I’ll roll with you baw. I don’t know what I’m doing but we can figure it out together. Let’s oil up the first few times to help avoid injury while we learn.

I know el gaucho is usually trolling, but he seemed genuinely interested from his first post.

Most people quit after a couple of months. A lot also quit once they get to blue belt.

It actually isn't ridiculous at at all to start in gi for self defense application since most people wear clothes. I can choke you out if you are wearing a t-shirt. Just give me some fabric to get my hands on. The concept is the same.

34 year old brown belt, been training ~10 years.
You'll want to quit 10,000x. Just keep showing up.

I might just go to one this week if they have a close one to my house

You are not going to collar choke me with a t-shirt or even a polo for that matter. You do it because of the thick arse rugged lapels that make up a GI.
That said, most advanced belts swear by it. I just feel silly putting that on.

You can absolutely collar choke someone with a t shirt. If you bunch it up it becomes as strong as a gi

If I recall, you are in the North Houston area. I live on the North side of The Woodlands. Been thinking of starting BJJ. Used to bring my son to Magnolia BJJ and know they had a great kids program, but it's too far from where our new house is. Any suggestions in that area?
Also, what are the typical monthly fees you are looking at? I can't even recall what we paid for my son, and already got the wife to allow me to purchase gym equipment for the garage...she may not go for $200 a month for this,

Most places I've seen are in the $150-200 per month price range. Usually, there are discounts if multiple people from the same family sign up.
